Is Coin Roll Hunting Really Worth the Effort?

I have done this on and off for years, but have recently wondered if it is really worth the effort? I mean you got to drive to the bank, deal with standing in lines to exchange cash for coins, then go through them all to maybe find a few goodies, then roll them all back up and repeat. I realize that it costs nothing, except gas money and time. But nowadays is there really that much good stuff in circulation to be worth it? Or could you spend that time and energy hunting ebay for good deals, or going to yard sales, antique shops, etc. Basically is the thrill of the hunt really worth it anymore?

Depends on if you enjoy doing it or not. If you're roll hunting purely for monetary gain, probably not worth the time, effort, gas, etc. But if you enjoy doing it, than I think it's worth it. I have fun roll hunting occasionally;)

Agree...every now and then you hit a jackpot and I love that feeling. On the other hand, you also get a "why bother" feeling when you haven't hit anything after 3, 4, or 5 trips...kinda bums you out :rollling:

You are doing it for the love of the search... you certainly cannot assume it as a way to "get rich quick" method....you'll always be bummed.

    btw...welcome

Totally. But I don't think anyone CRH's purely for a monetary gain. That would be slow going. I guess what I mean is do any of you who coin roll hunt find anything that makes your day anymore? Is it really that exciting to find a few pretty bad condition silver dimes per $250 box? Do any of you question if it is worth it?

If all I hit was a couple of worn of silver coins i'd would give it up too....but i think if you read some of the stories on this thread, you will see that many of us have found $400-800 worth of good stuff in normal customer rolled coins....i think it's worth it but that's me.

I've never found any big money items in rolls, but I've found some Indian cents and a modern proof dime (in great condition). Those made me pretty happy.

Do you think if you live in a more populated place like a city or suburb of, you have a better or worse chance of finding some gems? When I lived in the sticks of Vermont I used to have better luck. Plus I feel with Silver being the "in" thing there are obviously a lot more people CRH. I have found some pretty cool finds, but I feel like the return for the work is not there, at least anymore.

It's about the fun of the hunt. If your in it purely to make money you should probably stop doing it. For example when I am doing nickels I'd much rather find an AU or ms pre 60 or a buff or worn out liberty than a silver nickel. I just love that feeling when you find something. I don't care about making money off it.

It's not really something you'd do for the profitability. It's more like the thrill of the hunt. And, there are, of course, far more expensive ways to pass your time.

I understand that CRH is not a way to "profit".....I am wondering if the coins found are really worth the effort? I suppose you could walk around parking lots at Walmart and could possibly find a silver war nickel or a rare wheat penny. It could happen, and it would be a hunt. But something tells me you don't do that. As a coin collector are there quality coins to find for collectability in bank roll coins? Still?

There is most certainly still gems out there in rolls. Just go through the roll searchers thread page by page Nd you'll find examples. For me I'm a huge nickel fan. I have found several pre60 AU/MS coins even in the 40s. I have also found several full and partial date buffs and 2 full date V nickels. However, if you have to talk yourself into it like you are trying to do you probably shouldn't start searching. It takes patience and persistence to find the diamonds in the rough.

You guys are not searching right. The money is in half dollars. I just look at the edges for silver so can go through 10 rolls in a few minutes. I average 1 silver per 10 rolls. The only problem is finding a bank that has them.

I did search halves for a while but have recently stopped due to being low on cash. I agree, if you're going for silver halves and dimes are where it is at. I'm just stating the nickels as an example that there are still collectable pieces to be found. I loved searching halves for silver also. The ounces add up quick with halves. Around here though, halves are kind of dry right now.

Getting halves here though is easy. The banks will order boxes of them for you if you're a customer.

I did the half dollar thing. No luck. Maybe because I live in a busy area, that have many people hunting.

There is no 'right' or 'wrong' in searching. You can search whatever you want. Yes, halves generally produce the most silver, but one may not be after only silver. That's why nickels are fun, because along with silver, there are buffs and v nicks that make the hunt thrilling.

Coin Roll Hunting is totally worth the time and effort for me. The only expense is in my time -- I walk to every bank that I go to in order to pick up and dump. I've found quite a few silver coins, plus there are many other upsides to going to the bank everyday. I've been able to land many special offers just by frequenting multiple banks.

If you drive down costs to just your time, you can find CRH to be a very rewarding and profitable way to pass the time!

I like hunting pennies because you just never know what you're gonna find. I don't even think about making money on it, though it's nice when it does. I just like the thrill of not knowing what the next one is gonna be.
