    Hello Everyone,
I just purchased a weird lot on e-bay. it is a mixture of renaissance faire medals and some what i am hoping are real coins. i think there are 3 elizabeth I, 2 Richard II, and a mary dated 1557. I am attaching a link to the item on E-bay. The pictures aren't very good so i will try to scan them tomorrow or Monday at work and post to the thread. If anyone has an opinion from the e-bay listing any feedback would be appreciated.

thanks much to all in advance;)

Here's the pictures maybe someone can tell me if these are real

The pictures are very fuzzy. But the coins are most certainly not genuine. Which is about what I would expect from an item described as "Play Coin Lot".

sherry , I'm no expert of coins from that era , maybe you should post this in World and Ancient coins if no one comes around for another hour or two .

I should maybe explain where they came from. The seller is a woman that goes around to estate sales and picks stuff up that she thinks would sell on e-bay, she has no idea what she buys. I am not so sure that they are replicas. I have done a little research and there was an Elizabeth that was minted without a rose or a date. These coins are in all different conditions. I think before you judge you should wait to see the scans. I will try to get them on tomorrow (the scanner is messed up at work).

For 15 bucks plus shipping you've at least have some good conversation pieces or even some genuine pieces if not all of them. I know nothing of these coins as I only collect and study US coinage. IMHO you got a very cool buy.

    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Walter..... I do Renaissance re creation and i hope to start a collection for an Arts/Sciences Project Competition. I really need to be informed on what i am talking about though and any opinions on these coins that i can gleam from here would be wonderful.

I recognize that piece-of-eight with the hole in it from the "pieces of eight" store at disneyland. They used to have a punch machine that would inscribe said coin replicas for you. I wonder what this one says on the other side?

None appear real apart from possibly the Elizabeth I 1583 sixpence bottom left. It does appear to have been holed and plugged in the past, so it is probably not worth very much.

The top two are in pewter (they should be gold). Genuine examples of the 1557 Mary queen of Scots piece are very rare and the rim looks wrong for a hammered coin. The bottom right Elizabeth I peices are obvious cast fakes-compare the reverse lettering with the 1583.

    Tiki,

I do not see a Spanish Piece-of-Eight in the bunch! I think you are referring to the coin with the repaired hole and if so, I believe that it is an Elizabeth I coin.

    Sherry,

It would help if you could provide some closeups of the coins when you receive them! From the appearance, all of them look like that they could be real except for the top right coin. However, it is possible that it is real as well and picked up something from the enviroment(s) in which it has been over the past several hundred years. You might want to have them checked by a trusted and knowledgeable Coin Dealer. If they are in fact genuine, then you not only did well on the purchase, you did very, very, very well!

    Frank,
Here are some scans. I hope they are clearer. One thing i've found out so far is that coin photography is not that easy lol. I am also sending these to a local dealer. I'll let you know what he thinks.

    Sherry,

Except for the one I pointed out, I can see nothing on the other coins to make me believe that they are fakes or reproductions! However, I am not an expert on coins by any means and especially old European coins. Hopefully, some of the folks that know more about these, will offer their insight about their authenticity and values!

    Thanks Frank,
I just sent pictures of the coins to Heritage, I am sure they can tell me they are real and what they are worth. I will post with the results.

The one token that say The Renaissance Pleasure Faire is probably a souvenir from the annual faire that we have in Northern California; Sonoma county I believe. The rest look like they could be real. I'm like most that have already posted here, unsure. Any way you look at it you bought an interesting bunch of coins/tokens for the money.
