I'm curious about the experiences of people who have bought or sold type sets, whether it's the 7070 or a more comprehensive set. Is a nice type set worth more than the coins would be when sold individually? Or do sellers of type sets realize a loss if they try to sell the entire set at once?
if I were to sell it.... it would be sold separately because a buyer might only want certain coins for their type collection or certain series they are collecting.
Pretty sure there will be loss when selling the entire set at once, unless you`re willing to wait for a long time until the right buyer finds your set. I always see various sets (not necessary type sets) on eBay selling for way less than it could have sold if coins where offered separately.
BTW, with the recent addition of 1863 1c (1860-1864 type) I now got 61 coins/types in my expanded US type set. Circulation only, no proofs.
Problem with selling an entire set is finding the right buyer for it. Most buyers are probably not going to be interested in the entire set and will be looking just to grab a few coins out of it. The exceptions I see is if its a low grade example set then you might be better off selling the entire set as buyers won't be looking to cherry pick certain coins and you might see more for the set or if you do find that buyer who just wants a complete set without having to take the time or energy to put one together. If you sell it to a dealer they are going to break it up most likely and are going to want a low price on it knowing they will have to sell it over time and individually. There is a complete 7070 on ebay with the gold page that I have had in my watch page for 6 months now, he does it as a 30 day auction and when it ends he just relists it over and over I think hes a little high priced on the set but he just can't seem to sell it as an entire set. http://www.ebay.com/itm/230751768916?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 For the most part you are better off piecemealing the set out unless you can find the right buyer.
A complete set is much less liquid and, unless it is uniformly spectacular, is worth less intact, too.
In short a collector isn't likely o buy it because they are building their own set not just acquiring one someone else built. A dealer will buy the set, but he knows he will have to break it up and sell it piecemeal so he is not going to pay more for the set than he can sell the individual pieces for.
