IRELAND. Gun Money Shilling, 1689 (Oct). Dublin Mint. James II. PCGS AU-55. S-6581D (old S-6581E); KM-94. Last purchase of my first auction.
Very nice example of a very historical issue! For a relatively new collector of World coins (if I remember correctly), you seem to have pretty nice taste! There's an earlier thread about these. I used to own this July 1690 gunmoney halfcrown (PCGS AU53).
Thanks. And I'm glad I've learned a little something. Still don't know if I'll make this a hobby in the long run, but I found a few things I liked and can live with (and stayed on budget). My first auction purchases- CLAUDIUS, A.D. 41-54. AE As (10.01 gms), Western 'Branch Mint', ca. A.D. 41-50. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Light Scratches. GERMANY. Weimar Republic. 5 Mark, 1930-J. Hamburg Mint. PCGS MS-63. IRELAND. Gun Money Shilling, 1689 (Oct). Dublin Mint. James II. PCGS AU-55. IRELAND. 10 Pence, 1975. Birmingham (Heaton) Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-65.
Nice shilling! I really like the color and the state of preservation. More often than not these coins are in pretty rough shape. As tokens they were never redeemed for silver coinage, as promised by James II, so many were likely discarded, reemerging over three hundred years later looking as if they were thrown away. Here's an odd ball that might have been one of those coins, a half crown with June spelled Jnue, a pretty rare bird. Too much Guinness? The coin was purchased from Dale Seppa back in the 1980s, when collectors ordered coins from printed price lists, with eventual delivery by ox cart. Buying coins have improved since then, generally speaking. Ireland, James II, AE half crown "gun money", 1690, "Jnue" error. Purchased from Dale Seppa. 10.60 grams
