I am excited that I have an interview with a local bullion and coin shop next week. If I obtain this position this would fulfill a lifetime dream of mine, working within the coin business.

I know a few of you are working in retail coins stores and any advice that you can give me would be appreciated.

    That's great news Farstaff.

I have been at the local shop for about 2-1/2 years now. It can be exciting but it can also be quite mundane at times.
    Still I really enjoy it.

If you get this job realize that the minute you set foot on the OTHER side of the counter it's a different world.

You'll see a lot of coins you want to own and certainly be able to get them at better prices but remember you still have to do silly things like eat. ;)
Bullion is insane right now and shows no signs of letting up. We ran our butts off today and I did not sell a single coin for numismatic value. It was all bullion.

Pay attention to the way your boss and co workers conduct business and especially try to do it the boss' way. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I look at it this way it's not MY money I'm playing with so I don't want to make a costly error.

Expect to do a lot of research. One never knows what will walk in the door. I have gone from a guy with very little interest in World coins and paper money to the "World paper guy" because I look most of it up.

Realize that you'll never know it all but you will learn on a daily basis. This is really part of what got me offered a job at the shop. Knowing a little about a variety of aspects makes you an asset.

I'm sure others will provide some great advice and insight. Get the job and enjoy it!

Be prepared. It seems every coin collector I know who has gained employment in a coin shop has withing a year given up on coin collecting. Clembo may be the exception.

Thanks Clembo, I remember when you landed that position and posted it on CT. If I recall correctly you use to do construction painting. I appreciate your advice.
