They look like they'd be pretty good to skip across a lake.

Well, it's good to see scientists spending the time and money working on something worthy for a change, like space money, instead of the same old junk like a cure for cancer or aids, or renewable fuels. Research dollars well spent (where's that rolly eyes icon when I need it?!)

With our mysterious 'artificial gravity' we don't use Quids on the enterprise.

    Guy,

They've been working on those other "worthy" things for years. Problem is when they come up with a solution, no matter how simple it might be, they need to make money off of it.
High powered lobbyists don't want to fix problems as much as make money off of them.

Guess they may be getting a head start on space coins.

It sounds like some gimmick made up by a currency-conversion company, probably hoping that people will buy the set (costing around $200) to collect.

I wonder if they are shaped like that, so you can stash them in a safe place.

I really doubt any research dollars have been spent on this.

    They must be kidding

Are the people making these for real, or are they just being silly?

The answer to both parts is, "Yes."

All may sound like a joke but someday in the future all monitary systems on Earth will be unified. Just my opinion but Europe is attempting it now. The rest of the world will have to do it someday in the future.
Now whether or not the Feringy (may not be spelled right) will accept this is purely speculative.

I seriously doubt there will ever be a true universal currency. After at least 20,000 years of humans trading goods for other monetary devices, from gold to seashells, it seems we'd be closer today to that scenario, instaed of farther away as the years have passed.

Countries don't even base their money on hard bullion anymore, so there is little, if any, incentive to standardize any exchange rate. As most people in Europe that have adopted the Euro will tell you, it has failed on most of it's original selling points already.

It's HalfTime in a good game, but here is an interesting InterGalactic Russian coin. I posted it here before but the thread it was is is dead.

    No, no, not the whips!

I looked it up. It's 'Ferengi.'

The article says that credit cards would be impractical because of transmission times.

Why not just have debit cards that you load up before launch? Out of atmosphere, just use a really tiny version of the network for credit cards on earth. After landing, any necessary transfers could be made electronically between accounts in question.

[Ferengi use whips that fire a pule of energy as weapons, in case you were wondering
