I've seen a lot of nice early Roman silver pieces on this site lately but I think it's time for my favorite, little late Roman bronzes. This Theodosius II ae3 is a tough coin to find and is one of my favorites. Reverse is GLORORVI - S TERRAR, showing emperor stg with standard and cross on globe. This one-of-a-kind reverse legend translates to Glory to the World. Why they chose that legend I'm not quite sure.
Now this is a Theodosius I could want in my collection. Most are sad coins with miserable reverses. This one is very interesting.
That is one neato little coin... particularly the interesting reverse legend. This is the only Theo II I have.. THEODOSIUS II AE4 2.18g, 16.5mm Constantinople mint, AD 406-408 RIC X Constantinople 144 O: DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right, star behind. R: GLORI-A ROMA-NORVM, emperors Honorius and Arcadius standing vis-a-vis holding spears and shields, between them young Theodosius II standing holding a globe and spear with his head turned to the right; CONSB in exergue.
Great OP... I never thought that I would have one... but here is my Theo II Roman Imperial Theodosius II, AD 408-450 AE4, 11mm, 0.8g, 6h; Cyzicus mint, AD 425-435. Obv: DN THEODOSIVS PF AVG; Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev.: No legend, cross within wreath // SMKB Reference: RIC X 451, Scarce, p. 275. Ex: @John Anthony
that's a sweet little AE 4 with a great reverse brian! I could have swore I had a Theodosius ii, but I guess I don't! I have a coin like Z's (which is a VERY nice one), an Honorius where Theodosius II makes an appearance on the reverse...
