I've been gobbling up 1928 D and S SLQs of late, something of a study in dies and mint mark varieties and whatnot. Here's a neat one I picked up last week, look to the left of the date and below the mint mark to see what I mean. Paid way too much, seller called it an XF but the die problem intrigued me...
Got a better loupe out last night, there are indeed some very tough to see die crack hairlines in there. I'll see if I can't get my camera to snap a pic of it.
rld: you said "I've been gobbling up 1928 D and S SLQs of late, something of a study in dies and mint mark varieties and whatnot. " Why did you pick that date & those mints? Just curious.
Frank, Fair number of mint mark varietes.. doubling, etc. It's not just the Small S and Large S that you see in the Guidebook. Cline lists 2 S/Ss, two D/Ds and 1 S/D. Maybe it's the Philatelist in me.. who knows... fun stuff, I might have found a different Denver mint mark variation, need to get this coin under a microscope tho. Bill
Bill: Thanks for the note, interesting. Is there a good picture of the S/D? [ps have you ever found one?] And the others?
Frank, I have found what appears to be one, but the coin is a very poor copy, an AG. I'll see if I can't get a picture of it up tonight, basically, what you want to look for is just to the left of the upper serif on the mintmark. If you have JH Cline's book it's discussed on pages 183-184, it might be on google books preview, I didn't check. Again, once I get near them I'll try and get some pics up later tonight. Bill
