I found a few nice pieces today searching some bulk silver. I was sold a half bag of silver quarters and halves. After taking the time to search it, I found a few worthwhile coins: a 1938-D Walker in F-15, a 1917-S Obv Walker in F-15, a 1916 Walker in VG-8, as well as some AU pieces. I also found a few VG Barber Halves, including an 1894-S, and some better date Franklin Halves. All you silver hunters keep an eye out. There are good pieces still to be found in silver deals!
I always wondered if with the larger silver dealers one would have better luck finding AU coins or even semi-key dates in low condition due to the volume and it not being cost effective for them to deal with the low value items.
That's a great story. It makes me think seriously about buying some of these mixed coin bulk silver bags. The premium between buy/sell can sometimes be erased with just a small move forward in the silver price. Fill slots and sell off the rest.
Seems that in one way the 38-D isn't a "rare" as some people think it is. There is a guy that hoards coins around here...last time I looked through some of his coins I picked out a 1938-D in VG. ANACS graded it F15. He says that I can go back and look at more of his stuff before long so I hope to pick out some more good stuff. He really only likes the nice BU stuff and lets the lower, circulated grade stuff go for around melt. When I got the 38-D I think I paid around $15. Speedyd
There seem to be many collectors who feel that way. I personally like older circulated silver coins and occasionally some of the better dates go for surprisingly low prices.
Hey Treas, You and I must make a pact, we must bring Coin Collecting back Where there is a coin, Ill be there Frank
Wow, nice finds! And nice buy to you too Speedy. :thumb: Stuff is out there, in more places than one if that makes sense, lol. Phoenix
those are some really cool finds! did you pay melt for them? i kinof wish i had the money to buy unsearched silver like that. its probaly hard to find bags like that, since dealers like to search them, and call them unsearched.
I do not think 38-D Walkers are as tough as they are made out to be. It's a lower mintage date, but has commonly been a hoard and promotional coin. When they went up in value quickly a few years back, there was a dealer who buying them aggressively in quantities. They have actually softened a bit over the past year, and they sell for greysheet levels, NOT trends levels.
