Hi all, I am obviously new but have been reading on here for about 2 months. I'm not a big collector, it's just a part time hobby because I don't really have much money to spend on it but I enjoy it nonetheless. Besides, sometimes you can put together a collection of interesting things basically for free if you look at your change like I do. My girlfriend works part time at the most popular gas station in a nearby small town of about 8000. I have told her a couple things to look for, such as pre 64 quarters, pre 70 halves, bison nickles, $2 bills, or anything else which she thinks does not look ordinary. 2 days ago she is holding a coin and asks me what a half dollar is worth. I asked her what kind, a kennedy or franklin. She asked me what a franklin looks like, so I told her and she said it wasn't Ben on the coin. Then she says it has a lady in a dress. I tell her to let me see it, and my friends were standing around so I asked whos it was. She said it was mine now, some lady came in the store today and spent it. It was a 1941 Walker, prob. in VG to Fine condition, nothing special. Still, being only 22 years old, it was the 1st one I have ever seen in circulation. I told her that was a good find IMO because even though it isn't worth much, it is special to me. Today, she hands me another coin that I don't know about. Guessing it's from the UK or something since the design reminds me of a pound. It is about the size of a US nickel, says Queen Elizabeth the Second with her picture in the middle on the obverse, and a reeded edge with a groove cut into the middle all around the edge. The reverse has the words "Ten Cents 1957 Hong-Kong" around the edge, and in the middle appears to be 4 different oriental symbols. Can anybody tell me what I'm looking at? I have mentioned my guess earlier, but the Hong Kong thing throws me off and I still don't know how a coin from the UK minted 48 years ago would be circulating in the US. Guess stranger things have happened! Thanks for the help!
This coin is exactly what you described it a Hong Kong 1957 Ten Cent. Prior to 1997 Hong Kong was a UK dependent and a member of the British Commonwealth, so any coin made made before 1997 had British Royalty on it, because they would of been the King or Queen of Hong Kong as well. Untill 1997 of course
Thanks for the info Defiant7. I know the question might have seemed kind of ignorant considering it said hong kong 10 cent, but I had no idea that Hong Kong was under the British. Guess I always paid more attention to US history than foreign. Wish I knew how this coin made it to southern Illinois from Hong Kong!
Yep, that would be it Dock. It's funny that she hasn't found much in the last couple months other than a few canadian coins which are pretty common, and within a couple days, produces a Walker half and a 10 cent piece from Hong Kong. I'm still waiting for her to hand me a Morgan that somebody used to buy a coffee, LOL.
When I was working at Stop-n-go back in the 80's a guy came in and bought a few gallons of gas with 3 Morgans. Night shift guy got them .
