On coppercoins - Subject from initial post: "Due to a discussion over in LCR that spilled over into the CONECA forum, the doubled die Lincoln cent 1956-D, DDO-001 has been de-listed by Dr. James Wiles. The larger story behind this de-listing is that Dr. Wiles now believes that the numbers were engraved into the master die and not punched in as previously thought." I wonder what the reach and implications of this new (idea/insight) might be?
Maybe you could give us a little more info on this. The 1956D-1DO-001 appears to be different than the one you're talking about.
(DDO-???) is CONECA listing format, (WDDO-???) is Wexler/NCADD listing Format, (1DO-???) is Daughtrey/coppercoins listing format. 1956D 1DO-001 (Daughtrey) is not the same coin as 1956D DDO-001 (CONECA).
Hi, This is no surprise as it has been known for a long time that the only place a number is added is to the master die ......and that they were engraved each year and not punched. This has been the practice on most coins since 1909. There is no such thing as a repunched digit or date on a Lincoln cent. Thanks, Bill
