I found this dime in the tip jar at work; I was curious as to what happened to it, and whether or not it's worth anything.

This is the 'normal' side of the coin-no scuffs, scratches, nicks, or any other damage; it looks perfectly new.

Here's where it gets interesting. I can't tell what year or mint it's from, obviously, but I found it just yesterday. Does anyone know what happened? I'd be happy to answer detailed questions concerning the coin...just ask. Thanks for any information!

Howdy Maynard8605 - Welcome to the Forum !!

At first I thought it might have gotten caught in a rolling machine - but I can't see a rolling machine making grooves like that. I'd have to say the coin was intentionally altered.

    Hmmm....

Yeah, that's what my first reaction was too...how would you go about doing that to a coin though? You know, this site is pretty cool, and I've always been interested in collecting coins. Any tips as to how I could get started?

It's not a mint error. The obverse was removed by some sort of lathe.

I'd say you already HAVE started Maynard ;) I can't think of a better first coin than the one you have pictured. It may not be worth $$$$ - but it is unique :)

To be honest with you there are so many different ways and different coins that can be collected - if I were you I'd spend some time reading the posts here and see what appeals to you - what you like. Then take it from there.

Once you pick an area to focus on - then you can look for books on that subject. The old saying is - buy the book before the coin. And please feel free to continue asking questions - ANY questions about coins. That's how we all learn - by sharing with each other. Most of the time - the questions are far more informative than the answers ;)

Never thought about it that way.
Come to think of it, you're absolutely right.
