Just throwing this out there..this is very preliminary, and, will require a LOT of loupe time, picture-taking, and, finding some folks who have handled the "Light Satin".. PCGS)..."Light Finish"... NGC) Special Strike 2010 Grand Canyon, Hot Springs, Yellowstone and Gettysburg(since roughly only 8 Gettysburg's have been identified, we'll leave them out of the discussion...for now) Ok..so..here's what I'm working on...lets back up...here is a link to the first published article on the "New Discovery"..a New SP Finish Variety: http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=2265& That being said...4 coins have this "In-Between" finish, and, are pretty scarce...most pop reports have the bulk at SP66, 67.....as expected, 68, and 69 numbers dwindle, and, prices skyrocket...most of these are held in private collections. While attempting to put together a registry set of SP70 Coins, I had a hard time finding a Hot Springs...no 70's out there..they are tough to find..period....so, I decided to just buy a "filler" SP67, and, wait for a 70..I found a deal on a SP69 Hot Springs, and, bought that too..I also splurged, and bough a rare SP69 Mercanti-Signed BPS Label(PCGS POP=1) Grand Canyon "Light Finish"...I have 23 SP70 ATB's to compare with..as you know, the "Normal" Vapor Finish" coin is rough, with a "Granular" look... While viewing my SP67 First Strike PCGS Hot Springs..I noticed a smoother finish...perplexed, I looked at my SP69 First Strike PCGS Hot Springs..again, a somewhat smooth surface, both sides, compared to my other 2010 SP70's....what has REALLY perked my interest is this: The finish on my Hot Springs is SMOOTHER than on my "Light Finish" SP69 Grand Canyon..by a smidgen...so, now, the questions were flying...did PCGS "speed" grade the Hot Springs, and miss the proper designation as "Light Satin? Or, perhaps my expensive "Light Satin" G.C. was improperly graded? Does my "Regular" Grand Canyon qualify for a crossover into "Light Satin", as well? The difference between the 2 Grand Canyons is NOT what I would expect, and, the difference in finishes is, IMHO., minute...My SP70 Yellowstone is what I would consider a "Normal" SP strike, again, with a very granular finish that is instantly recognizable...I don't think "Die State" plays into this..here's why..I have EDS coins...they ALL have the normal "Rough" Vapor Blast finish, and, are "normal"...I also have LDS strikes..with much more granularity, die wear, die sink, and "orange peel" affect.....so, the theory that an "Early(First Strike" coin would be "smoother", is a moot point, as they are not supposed to be smooth at all. Part of me thinks some of the Bullion Planchets got mixed with Sp Planchets, and created this mess, plus, a acid blast goof up, to create what I am seeing.(All were, and, are Minted in Philadelphia...these "mixups" have happened in the past(wrong metal 1974 & 1977 Silver clad IKE Dollars, meant for San Francisco, Minted in Denver, for example) Bottom line...My coins need a complete examination by someone in the know...and that's not me...very few dealers collectors have this knowledge, and, have handled enough of these to be an expert, but, enough have to seek them out for help. Opinions welcomed on how to proceed...an expensive proposition to just send in as "crossover", but, I suppose at worst, they come back as is, in original holders...for a fee...at best..new knowledge, and, maybe new labels..and, a large jump in value.. So...do me a favor..check YOUR 2010 SP ATB's..let me know if I'm "seeing things" again...hopefully not, and, this discussion will move forward. Pics show "Normal", rough, granular finish, and, followed by the smoother Hot Springs in question, for preliminary purposes..many more pics need to be taken. Thanks for your time. Calvin G..
