Second trip to the coinshop today, and I must say I'm really beginning to like the place I bought: 1865 Two-cent Piece 1851 Three-cent Piece 1942-P Jefferson Nickel, AU. The most interesting piece, however, is the two-cent piece. I was looking it over once I took it home, and I've found some interesting marks on it...take a look at these pictures. I don't know what in the world this could be, but it looks like there are numbers or letters on the right side of the shield's horizontal bars! And in my scan, I saw what appears to be another 6 at about 5:00 below 5 in 1865. Tell me what you guys think! -Peter
I think I can just barely see what you're talking about in the first pic, but it's really hard to make out. Can you take better pictures? It may be a clashed die.
I can try, but click on the 2nd picture and look above the area between the 2nd and 3rd vertical lines in the shield. I see a "5" there. I'll try to take better pics, but no promises = \
with the amount of damage on the reverse of the 2-cent, you're likely to see just about anything. I think you're just seeing the effects of toning and lighting.
If anyone's having a rough time seeing what I'm talking about, make sure you click on the pictures! Especially the 2nd and 3rd. I'll see what I can do for better pics.
I do kinda see the 5 in the 2nd pic, once you enlarge it all the way... though it is at a very awkward angle. Look a little bit harder, maybe you will see it.
