I am in the process of moving some of my nicest raw coins into intercept shield 2x2s. I have heard they sell boxes for their 2x2s, and it looks like they have 2 rows in them that each hold 50 2x2s. My question is...are there little notches in the walls that hold the 2x2s in place or are they just stacked in there. The reason I ask is, I don't have 50 coins moved over just yet...and I want to store them such that they don't fall all over the inside of their box. Has anyone used these boxes before?
I have the single-row Intercept Shield boxes for my 2x2's and there aren't any notches in it, so I assume the double row would be the same. So yeah, they fall over if the box isn't totally full - I usually just put some empty 2x2's in there to hold up the others.
I'm also converting alot of my colection to Intercept Shields and I use these http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/product/whitman-plastic-single-row-2x2-box.html They have two slots that you can insert in. I think it holds like 25 or 30 maybe
They fit ok, they have a little bit of wiggle room around the sides maybe a mm or two, so they ain't very snug on the sides, but fit ok.
If I understand you correctly these are the 2x2s you are planning on using - yes ? http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/products/intercept-shield-2x2-holders/ If so, and you want the ultimate protection you can get for the coins, then these are the boxes I would recommend using. I can't swear to it because I have never tried the combination myself, but I think the IS 2x2s would fit in there just fine. You might buy 1 box to try it out and see. Then proceed from there. http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/product/intercept-shield-anacs-track-box.html
Maybe I will try that. I wanted to use an IS box but they don't have tracks. You make a good point that the ANACS slabs are pretty small and their 2x2s would probably fit in there just fine.
I'm using the IS stuff I bought about 10 years ago - 2 x 2s and the boxes that hold 35 of them (36 for a tight fit) and a box and inner holders for slabs, which hold 10. According to what it says on the boxes, it's time to change them out now $$$$$
Is it really necessary to change them out that frequently? To be honest, I think I could live with airtites if I could fund a nice way to store them.
How do you define a nice way ? I used to just stack mine up inside one of those IS lined boxes. Worked like a champ. The fact that they rattle around a little bit sure didn't bother me. 99% of the time they are just sitting in the safe not moving at all. What's more important to you - protecting the coins, or having the box rattle a little bit the few times you pick it up ?
OK, just for the sake of argument, let's assume it is necessary to change to get new IS boxes every 10 years. 10 boxes holds 200 slabbed coins I think. Those 10 boxes cost you roughly $100. Over a ten year period that's $10 a year. Don't know about you, but $10 a year seems pretty cheap to me to protect those 200 coins. Which even if they were only worth $10 each, is $2000 worth of coins ? Imagine if they were each worth just $100 each. That's $20,000 worth of coins protected for $10 a year. For that, I'd help IS make all the profits they can !
You're right, if you value your collection, it's worth doing, and if they do the job (which they do, on my coins, so far), I'll help them profit also.
That's a good question. All I can say is, my coins in IS 2x2s in IS boxes have been fine for at least 10 years. The closest thing I have to air-tites are some single coins from the mint in OGP, in the capsules which are similar to air-tites, which are also still fine after 10 years or more. I like gdjmsp's idea of using air-tites in 2x2s in IS boxes, that might just work.
It's not that they are inferior at all. It's just that they, Air-Tites, do not have that extra level of protection that the IS 2x2s do have. That said, I stored many coins in Air-Tites, for many years, inside of those IS lined boxes. And I never once had one of them tone. It sure worked for me for a long time.
There is only one brand that I know of, those labeled Air-Tite. It is a registered trade mark and only Air-Tite can use it. Yes, there is another company who makes holders similar to Air-Tites, the company that the US Mint, and some other mints, uses. But in years of searching I have never been able to find out who that company is. And I suspect they do not even sell to the public.
