Interactions with a Coin Show Dealer - Pics and Brief Story

Took this coin to the recent major PNNA show here near Seattle. Wanted to see if I could get something close to an MS66 bid given the extremely choice toning, near 66 qualities and the coveted star.

First off, the vast majority of dealers were highly complimentary of the coin, just didn't want to be 'buried in a common date'. I accept that, 79 Philly isn't exactly a showstopper. A few insisted a retry with PCGS as the coin is truly on the verge of that grade, if not there.

One gentleman was nuts though. He immediately told me it was a "decent MS64 with marginal toning" and of course PCGS would never grade it that way. He thought an ms64 offer was more than generous.

Why do people act like this? All this guy sold was toned coins and many weren't nearly this quality but priced at least 2x dealer bid price on almost all occasions. up to 10x bid on MS63 commons. Why not just be honest and say it's not for you rather than try and be a cheesy car dealer?

BTW... I understand sales and negotiation. I buy land rights for a living.

I think you answered your own question, dealers are in the business of making money. A little honesty never hurts though. That is a lovely coin, but without a TPG MS-66, the only place you are going to get 66 prices is ebay.

As for the other, well people will be people. I think it's cool that only one guy was that way with you.
