Hi, I wonder, if anyone has seen this version of the Moscow Olympics 1980 Coinset before ? - I know of the silver coin version, but the pieces in this set are the standard Copper-Nickel-Zinc 1 Rouble Olympics Coins. The coins seem to fit perfectly well into the box, so I guess this set is in its original state. Can anyone help me with more information concerning sets made, reference numbers and possible value, please ? The set was bought in Berlin, Germany, less than a week ago, so I imagine it could have been a souvenir set brought home by an (East-)German Olympic visitor back then. Thanks for any help you may be able to give ...
I have found these on a U.K site but they appear in a red hinged case, not the blue you are picturing here. These may have been put together in their own case. It also stated that these were made in the millions so are only worth about $5.00 each. Anyone else know anything?
You mean you know silver version of these 1 rouble coins? I would like to hear more about that. The set on your photos is the original one, made specially to be sold to foreign visitors of the Olympiad. There are quite a few different original set boxes exist. I don't think information regarding amount of these sets made exists, I`d say a lot of them were made and sold and they can't be considered rare. The coins are worth $2-4 each in this condition, they don't look very good from those photos. This set with these coins is worth in the $35 area. By the way, coins in this box are supposed to be proof. Are they, but under heavy patina, or are they UNC?
This 28 coins set is not even close to $1000. Sold on ebay for $480 to $600, which is closer to real value.
I think many are underestimating how scarce this set is if it is what I believe. At first glance, these coins are not proof like. From memory, this is only one of the few proof-like coins that were issued in this set as well as some other display. Proof coins of such are NOT common. Either the coins have been switched out to cheaper UNC coins or the photos are not taken properly. Trust me, proof Olympic nickel-copper coins are not as easy to find as you may believe. It would have been worth more than 500+ in this set easily.
