Was looking through my change jar tonight and I found a few odds and ends that I thought were sorta interesting... 1st, I have a 2000 P Rosevelt Dime thats struck off to the side Looks pretty much like this... Is that actually an error coin I always here about? Worth any more than face? Mines in a lot better shape than the one pictured above and has no scratches... The other coin, not sure what it is... It says Half Penny 1863 , Its about the size of a Quarter, apears to be Copper On the side it has a person (can't tell Male/Femail assuming female) sitting with a round shield next to her and she has a long three pronged spear... Also looks like there might be a really small waving flag or sail boat in the bottom right corner??? The Reverse has some lady facing left and the text starting from the left and rotating right reads: Victoria D:G Britt:REG:F: (actually has those colons in those places) Looking at my ""Official Numismatic Grading Standards" by Whittman the Bust/Face side looks like it would grade somewhere between VG-8 and F-12, the other side looks like it would grade maybe EF-40 at best... Any ideas what its worth??? Just currious, I'm sure they are worth nothing really, but I thought they were a bit interesting and wanted to learn something new...
You really need to do a little elementary reading on coins of the world and/or world history. Queen Victoria reigned over Great Britain and the various colonies and affiliated countries from 1837-1901, and if she doesn't belong in the Guinness Book for having her effigy on the most coins of anyone in history, she is certainly close. The legend on your 1863 1/2d translates from the Latin as "Victoria by the Grace of God Queen of Britain and Defender of the Faith". (She hadn't yet adopted the title Empress of India.) It's a very common bronze coin. The reverse shows Britannia, the allegorical symbol of Great Britain, holding her trident. The dime you show is a badly damaged, slightly off-center example worth 10¢ at any Walmart or 7-11. Without seeing a picture of yours, there is no way to tell whether it is actually an off-center strike or has after-mint damage; but the probability is that it is also a 10¢ coin.
I found some pics of a simmilar Coin (off by a year) online using google... Just copied in "Victoria D:G Britt:REG:F:" and it found a few links... I really didn't think it would come up with anything since I did really know what to call it... Except mine says Half Penny (not penny) and the date, its a year off, mine is a 1893.. Any coin still around and readable from 1863 kinda cool to me... Even if it is ""Common"".... Thanks for the friendly History lesson....
Yes, but I don't really recall when or what is was given as.... I have this tray on the entertainment center in my bedroom that I put my change in everynight... When it gets full, if I don't feel like rolling it, I dump it in a bigger container... Then every so often I look though it for keepers and roll the majority.... I found it the other night with that dime and was like WTF???
i usually look in my change for keepers before i put it into a container. everyones different though.
I do the same. I look throigh my pocket change, check to see if i can add anything to my modern albums, pull out the pre-82 cents, foreign coins and anything else odd and then put them into the jar and cash them in when that fills up.
