For some time I have been very interest in the whole D.B. Cooper case and the money that has been found over the past 20 years. I really want to obtain a note from the recovery. I saw one on ebay that didnt sell for $5,000 but I think thats grossly over priced. If anyone has any light to shed on this subject would be great (Value of a note, if you own one, where to buy one, etc)
I know the government kept most of the notes and let the person that found the notes have a few. They must be extremely rare. Is there any way to know that the note being sold was actually retrieved during the find? I do know the serials were logged before giving Cooper his ransom demand. I personally feel $5,000 would be a steal if you could know 100% it was authentic. These notes should be in major auction houses not on eBay.
I just read the story, and as Tyler said if you knew it was real, $5000 is not too much to pay for such an interesting piece.
Well PMG and PCGS certify DB Cooper notes and they know its authentic because of the serial numbers but also the notes arent perfect, they are for the most part only 40% of the note remaining and burnt but thats a bonus to me becuase it adds more to the story, and they are lots of notes, out of the $6,000 found, they guy got to keep $3500 of it and when that translates to $20 dollar bills, thats atleast 175 notes (Becuase more is found every year, not many though). I remember when they first auctioned them off and the numbers were around $800 a note.
Feel like getting your hands dirty? You should head up there with a shovel and a tent. The Pacific northwest is beautiful this time of year... Can't be any worse than digging for gold?
Hey, I only live about 50 miles from there -- I'll go get my trowel! You're right, this is the best time of year to be in the Northwest. I saw some of these notes in the paper today, they look terrible! Not sure I'd pay $5,000 for one. In theory there could be more than 10,000 $20s still out there, and if someone finds another hoard the price will plummet.
In 1980 when more than $5,000 was found the bills were half destroyed, 30 years later they are dirt. There are no more. IMHO
