I recently found an indian head penny but it was a part of some kind of belt buckle. The coin looks in wonderful condition although its in a clear cirle protective thing. Now idk if it'd be worth anything since its in the clear thing. If I took it out, could it still be worth something? Or even if I left it as is?
If I posted a picture from the front angle..you can hardly see the coin because my camera totally sucks.
If it were a key date, then maybe. Otherwise, no. (Caveat: I'm still a student. Wait to see what the Masters say ;-)
Hi Serena, I've seen a few of these before (Indian Head Cents put into belt buckles, and other 'jewelry' type items), I'm sure the guys who run a storefront see these a lot though. It's impossible to tell from the photo, but from the ones I've seen it's usually a common date Indian in maybe a VG or F condition. So, the coin itself would be worth a few bucks at best, undamaged. But, if it didn't get damaged being put into the buckle, it probably would be coming out. I'd say keep it in there and it makes a nice novelty piece. I don't think taking it out would increase the value.
The coins are also usually cleaned and I think you would be lucky to remove the coin with out damage.
Like Peter said, you'd probably damage the IHC if you tried to remove it. Why don't you contact Charmy Harker, aka the Penny Lady, and offer it to her. I know that she has an extensive collection of penny exonumia that she exhibits at some of the bigger shows. Chris
