i started a set of low- mid grade indian head cents just for fun. i need to know -how much would an 1877 cost in G4? -how much would a 1908-S cost in G4-VG10? -same for a 1909-S - and are there any other key or semi-key dates i should know about? thanks, jlogan
The best way to find prices for coins like these is to get a free membership to Heritage Auctions online (www.ha.com) and look in their sold coin archives. I did a quick search and came up with these ranges for coins graded by PCGS and NGC based on the more recent sales: 1877 G4: $450-$540 1908-S G4-VG10: $60-$80 1909-S G4-VG10: $375-$450
Jlogan, You should be able to get a problem free G4 1877 for about $400-$450. They are always available in this grade, so watch some auctions via ebay and heritage for accurate market grades. Do the same for the 08s and 09s. I think you should be able to get G4s in those dates for about $75 and $350 respectively. There are not many low grade 09s indians. Most were pulled out of circulation soon after being minted. Tricky dates in problem free coins are 1866, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72. They will run between $25-$70 in Good condition.
This web site, Numismedia http://numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml eBay ended listings for what those coins actually sold for in the grades you're looking for Google search for those coins in those grades will take you non eBay sellers also to see what coin dealers are asking for them.
raw, mostly out of "G-VF indian" rolls i get for $25 each at the LCS. i have the entire last page of the album except 08-S and 09-S filled (i think its 1894-1909) and i have a few other holes filled, mostly in the 1880s-90s. i'll probably finish my kennedy set and most of my peace dollar set (all except the 1928) before i start really buying anything though
Other semi-keys would be the 1864-L and the 1872 All of the 1870's are a little better and some of the late 1860's as well.
