Has anyone ever seen a "shiny black" (Charcoal black) looking Indian Head Cent before? I would really like to know. I have searched all over the internet for about 8 months but can't locate any. If you have one, could you post a picture? OR does it mean that the one that I have has been altered in some way?
Sounds odd. Post a photo of yours. This depends on exactly what you mean by black. Dark, dark brown maybe, but black? And shinny black? All sounds like some doctoring up on that coin. I've always wondered why we haven't all be told to start saying "Native American Cent"? :smile
Some old collectors painted their coins with varnish to protect the finish before 1900. The surface of copper coins were almost black. So, I hope this info will help you. -O)
i have one that fits your description. as soon as i can figure out how to post a pic on here, i will.
That one look's as if it was in the ground for a long time. I find them when I go metal detecting, the ones I'm talking about are the nice ones, that have the varnish applied to them, to protect the surface of the coins before 1900. -O)
Yes, a copper coin that is black is usually from "environmental damage" which often means it's been in the ground or in moisture for a long time. So it's not a good thing to have a black copper coin.
I haven't seen a glossy black Indian, but I have seen glossy black large cents and frankly I find them very attractive.
