For those of you that coin roll hunt, I am wondering how often you are finding Indian Head cents and Liberty nickels. I don't know the exact number of boxes/rolls I have gone through, but I know I have gone through at least 10 -15 boxes of nickels and pennies each. So far I have found 1 1911 Liberty nickels and no Indian Head cents. I'm wondering if this is the norm, or do people find more. Thanks for the input, and continued luck in your search.

I have been through many boxes of nickels and pennies and have yet to find either the indian head or the liberty.:(

I'm sorry to hear that Pi man. I'm sure you will find one at some point and it will be one worth a lot of money :thumb:

I basically only search nickels and have only found one very corroded 1899 Liberty nickel. It was so bad that I actually released it back to the wild.

Regarding frequency, well it simply depends on luck. Average would be probably one every couple thousand or so, but there have been searchers that found a mini hoard, but those instances are outliers.

Hi Flute, sorry to hear the one you found was in such bad condition. I can imagine the excitement of finally finding one only to have it be in really bad shape:( I was pretty fortunate to find one in decent shape. If you don't mind me asking, approximately how many boxes do you think you have gone through?

Since 2007 I have found 8 IHCs and 11 Liberty nickels. As recently as a week and a half ago I found my earliest IHC, an 1882 that looks like it was in a shootout. Curiously enough I have only found 2 of the IHC's in BWR, the rest were in CWR. Libs are another story - I have found 1 of them in CWR, the rest in BWR.

That is awesome you found that many so far. :hail: It seems from the responses I've received so far I can expect to find one or two of each a year at best. The liberty I found was in a BWR too. Last week I stopped by a local bank and bought 5 rolls. Half way through roll #3 there it was.

I did not find my first IHC until May of 2010. In July 2011 I found three of them in three bags of cents that one of my bank's had from an older depositor - there were also quite a few wheats in that bunch. If you search enough and put up with a lot of dud boxes, bags, rolls you will find them eventually.

$800 in cents and $2100 in nickels and I have yet to find either. :( I only started in August so I can be patient.

That's right, you have lots of time to find some. With any luck it will be sooner then later and a great find too :thumb:

I have gone several weeks without finding even a Buffalo, and then find a whole bunch of those and silver war nickels in bunches. Guys on here find Mercs in dime rolls, I have yet to find any - but I still search because I do find enough silver Roosies that my desires for silver are satiated - last search I went through only $100 worth of dimes but found three silvers.

Seems as though I'm covering my bases with other finds so it's only a matter of time before one pops up. In the last two weeks I've pulled 2-2000 WAM's, a 1982 with a cud on it, and a 1975 clipped planchet. Come on Indian Heads!

Scottishmoney, do you like the Liberty's or the Indian Heads better?

I like IHCs better - they have a nicer design, and I find fewer of them than the Liberty nickels. I really did not start keeping records of my finds until early last year - before then I never bothered to log how much coin I had gone through to find the stuff I have. I have to estimate I have probably gone through about 1.5 million cents over the years. I have really slowed down on cents and only get them from my credit unions, as a favour to them for selling me the rest of the coin.

Don't expect to find IHC's too often. I once read an article from 1995 that talked about the ratio of finding IHC's in circulation. The author said IHC's turn up, on average, once out of every 30,000 cents searched. That was 18 years ago, the ratio seems to have gone up a lot because I found my one and only IHC just last December: http://www.cointalk.com/t10176-1641/#post1602096 I went through 51,500 cents (1,030 rolls) to find it but that doesn't include all of the cents I went through before I started keeping stats.

Wow, I knew they were hard to find, but I didn't realize they were that rare in circulation. Thanks for the info.
