Prospector, The Indian Head Cent in your photo is a 1902 Snow-4 variety Rick Snow of Eagle Eye Rare Coins I found one a little over a year ago at a small coin shop. Thought it was very interesting. My son thought it was more interesting and talked me out of it for his collection Hope this helps. Here is a link to 1902 Indian head Cents listed by their Snow Numbers over at the Fly-in club http://www.fly-inclub.org/1902varpage.htm Here is a shot of My Son's 1902 Snow-4 Terry
Well you learn something new every day - i'm just disappointed i learned something new and it's only 7:10 AM. Just looked at Snow's book, this is a 3-star variety, meaning "A highly sought aver variety with a premium between 3X and 5X (the value of the coin without the error)"
Hobo, Harshly cleaned,Definitely, The only reason I happen to know anything about that coin was when I saw that gouge under a loupe in the coin shop. I noticed that it was raised instead of incuse. Then the adventure began. It took me the better part of two weeks to track it down. There are not many shots of that one out there if you do not know the right words to search for. I was searching for "Black Eye Indian" "War Paint Indian" :goofer:Some how I accidentally ran across one of Rick Snow's pictures.and figured it out. That is how I even learned about Rick Snow and his expertise in the area of Indian Head Cents and Flying Eagle Cents. Of course I knew about EagleEye on the forums but had no idea that they were one and the same. That particular coin stuck very well in my head. robbudo, I did not know that Snow had a variety book out Thank You very much for that. Did not know that, I think I need to get a copy of that book it would make identifying the next Indian Head much easier. My main area of study is Eisenhower Dollars. This one was harder than most of my Ike's to Identify. I learned something new today also this is a 3-star variety, meaning "A highly sought aver variety with a premium between 3X and 5X (the value of the coin without the error)" Thank You for that also Terry
Rick Snow has 3 books out on Indians, 1st is 1859-1869, 2nd is 1970-1889 and the 3rd is 1890-1909. The first 2 have been out awhile and are about $25 while the third is new and is about $30 or $35. But they are extraordinarily detailed and have 100's of detailed pictures. I've found 3 or 4 snow varieties at coin shows that were not marked as such, and now I'll be looking for the 1902.
Thanks for the info Stewart, I had a feeling it wasn't PMD. Since we're on the topic and I am not an avid indian cent collector and have no books on them can anyone tell me why these dates are different on these two? The date does not contour with the flow of the coin on the 1880 but does with the 1884.
