I just bought this Indian cent that is slabbed by NGC, as "Obverse Struck Through". They don't specify what it was struck through - does that mean they don't know? I have seen "struck through" errors slabbed by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. I've seen "struck through Grease", some "struck through debris", and have seen some "struck through cloth" or even "wood". I don't pretend to understand what makes some companies come up with specifics and what makes some companies even give strike throughs grades or not. Back to mine, I would assume it is struck through grease/water, but why didn't they indicate that? Does NGC tend not to specify that, and just indicates a generic less specific epitaph, indicating that it was just struck through *something*? thoughts are appreciated
My guess is that unless they can definitively determine what the cause of the strikethrough is that they label it without specifics.
Giving it a "generic" term, it releases any liability if it was specifically incorrectly identified. It's up to the collector now to determine what it was that caused the aberration.
All above are correct. And, really, doesn't matter what caused the error. These are largely "grease", but can be other things. Doesn't really matter, though. It's a nice key-date coin that had a rough start in life, that's all.
