I have always had a fondness of British-India coins from Queen Victoria and a few others but never was really dawn to anything else until about a month ago when I saw the 2 below coins for sale and I really loved the eye appeal of them. In hand they were quite nice one thinner than the other and larger in diameter AH1286 (1869) Hyderabad Hammered Silver Rupee and the other thick and chunky. AH1286 (1869) Indore Hammered Silver Rupee The seller stated the styles changed in between the states. Tonight I picked up another two. 1658-1707 AD Mughal India Emperor Aurangazeb Rupee 1657-1707 India Mughal Empire One Rupee Silver Emperor Aurangazeb Does anyone else collect these?
I collect them. But those in the Persian script like the Aurangazeb rupee are often certainly challenging to attribute correctly. By the way, great examples.
Nice coins. I have only just a few Indian coins - I really like them, but I have a heck of a time attributing them. Here is a scarce "jahangiri rupee" I got out of a local dealers junk bin (!) recently. This is a 20% heavier rupee that was only issued for a short time by Jahangir in the 17th century: India, Mughal Empire Jahangir (1605-1627) Jahangiri Rupee (20% heavy) AH 1016/2 (1607-1608 A.D.) Ahmadabad Mint kalima shahada, hijri date and zarb at bottom / nuruddin muhammad jahangir badshah ghazi. KM 152.2 (13.72 grams / 21 mm)
I bought several Mughal India coins recently and spent some time attempting to read the Arabic text on them with the help of Richard Plant's book Arabic Coins and How to Read Them. Mughal India Shah Jahan Rupee 1038 Agra Silver, 22 mm, 10:47 gm, KM 222.1, Struck at Agra (Dar-i-Khilafa) Obverse: Four horizontal lines of text Line 1: Badshah Ghazi (Emperor and fighter for Islam) Line 2: Muhammad Shah Jahan (King of the World) Line 3: Shahab ud-Din (Star of the Faith) Line 4: Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani Ahad (Second Lord of the Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, First year of reign) The Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn is an Astrological event and supposedly one born during the conjunction was destined for greatness. The "second lord" is due to the belief that Shah Jahan's ancestor Timur was also born during a conjunction. Reverse: Three horizontal lines of text Line 1: "There is no god but God" Line 2: "Muhammad is his messenger" Line 3: Sanat Dar-i-Khilafa Agra (Struck at seat of capital Agra) The year "1038" is on the left side. AH 1038 is around AD 1628. Shah Jahan went on a building spree and his most famous building, the Taj Mahal, is located in Agra (near Delhi). The round marks on the coins are test marks for silver.
That's a nice one. Yes I have bought a few that have the test marks as well. I wasn't $100 sure that's what they were but assumed.
Here are a few others I pick up since. Mughul Emp Shah Alam II (1759-1806) Silver Rupee dated 1781 Kutch state shree Raydhan ji -one kori -symbol of trisul & qatar silver 1928 MEWAR STATE -FATTEH SINGH - UDAIPUR MINT (I really liked the design of this one)

Thanks, me too! Yes, Roman gold coins are very $$$$$ esp. the aurei. I have 12 aurei/ 34 solidi/ semissis/ tremissis I find India has had very diverse coinage. I will try to post most so everyone can see them. The first one is really rare/ 3 known. For fun here is a aurei
I've got just a ton of copper or other base metal coins from India simply due to their low prices compared to contemporary coins from Europe or more well established/known numismatics. The majority of mine were around $5 a piece probably.
