    AR Jital "Bull and Horseman"
Obv: Nandi (the mount of Shiva) reclining; Nagari legend "Sri Samanta Deva", "Honorable Chief-Commander"
Rev: Mounted cavalry wearing ornate mask and holding flag.

This is a more typical specimen, but still solid on its own. The reverse is a bit off center as you cannot see the head of the horse which has already run off of the right side of the coin.

These are interesting coins but many of them are just so poorly struck that it is hard to ID them even if you have the book. It is one subject that I believe is better served by drawings compiled from several specimens rather than photos showing real coins with half the detail. I got really interested in them for a short while but moved along when finding different ones got harder. I wrote a hit and run page:

I don't know how many errors are on it.

Some rulers/periods made a higher percentage of decently struck coins than did others. I believe there are more decent coins of Khudarayaka than many more common times but that may just be the luck of what I found when I was looking. The hardest thing to find nice might be the minor bronzes (elephant/lion) that accompanied the bull/horseman silver.

Contrary to the Tye catalog i have chosen to stick to photographs for reference purposes. That does have its drawbacks, but makes it easier to prevent errors due to interpretation. One does often need multiple reference specimen surely, but it also illustrates that catalogueing is not static or an exact science.
