Here's a Kennedy with an indent in his head. I am using a scanner, so I appologize for the poor quaity of the picture. Is this an error or post mint damage. If an error, what type of error and how would this be caused? In hand, the coin has very little wear and a BU type shine. It doesn't look as though someone grinded it into the coin. I need some help as to what this is. The reverse is in perfect condition, and shows no defects direclly behind the indent. Help!
It's a "strike-through" error of some kind. Judging from the soft outlines, I would guess that the material was relatively soft. Perhaps a glob of grease. I have seen a number of Kennedy halves with similar-looking strike-through errors.
That's a strong indicator of a strike-through, as post-strike damage of that sort would just about have to come from either an impact or a grinder, and you say there's no sign of either.
