Has anybody put a full wheat cent set together out of circulation? I suppose if you want a great challenge, this would be it. Including what I found going through my dads change 10-15 years ago, this is where I stand; 1909-VDB 1909 1910 1911 1911-S 1912 1913 1913-D 1914 1915 1915-D 1916 1916-D 1916-S 1917 1917-S 1918 1919 1919-S 1920 1921-S 1923 1924 1924-S 1925 1926 1927 1928 1928-D 1928-S 1929 1929-S 1930 1930-D 1934 1935 1935-D 1936 1936-D 1937 1938 1938-D Everything 1939 and later. I've got quite a ways to go... haven't filled a hole in a while.
I was only missing the S VDB, 14-D, 22-, and 55/55, but that was 50+ years ago. And the last thing I think I found of any note was in the mid-60's. If you got those from circulation, you have done well.
I too have been working on a set for about 10 years. Only from pocket change. I'm far from finished but always pleasantly surprised by what I find. I'm paying more attention in the last year or so. Traveling back from business in PA last week I got a 1919 cent in change at a Starbucks on the NJ Turnpike. Today I got 1941 cent from a lunch counter in an office building here in Orlando. My wife and kids don't share the same enthusiasm that I have - but I enjoy these small surprises.
I've been putting together a set of wheat cents for a few months. My dad has a couple whitman folders he partially filled in the late 60's that I have been working off of. So far, I have everything 1936-present except 1954, and about half pre-1936. Still finding one I need every once in a while, though.
I'm doing bank rolls, like 5 boxes of cents a week, and not having much luck finding the older coins with mintmarks. I live right near Philly, so I'm rolling in those... Only missing the '21, then '31-'33.
That's a very impressive collection snagged from circ. I found early dates like that back in the mid-'60s but not so much today. I attended a confenerce a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta and one day I found - lying on the floor of one of the conference rooms - a 1941 Wheat Cent. You just never know what you are gonna find or where.
That's pretty cool you found all those dates and mintmarks from circulation. Find any of the rare dates, though would be a real treasure.
i only have a few, but my dad has been collecting them for years, he has at least 200 wheaties from diffrent years, but i havent asked to look at them, all from circulation, so there might be a gem in there
I haven't even thought about doing wheats. I just might do it though. The '43s would probably be very hard to find. As would the '09s. The oldest wheat I've ever picked out was a 1910 (in pretty decent shape at that). I'm workin on a Jefferson though. Surprisingly I'm only missing one last war nickel alloy. Thats it by year I think but I'm goin for the whole deal.
Since I last posted, I've gone through a ton of cents, of course, and I have two additions to show for it; a 1920-D and a 1922-D. Slowly but surely filling those holes...
Here's an updated list with the '20-D, '22-D, and the '32 I found today. 1909-VDB 1909 1910 1911 1911-S 1912 1913 1913-D 1914 1915 1915-D 1916 1916-D 1916-S 1917 1917-S 1918 1919 1919-S 1920 1920-D 1921-S 1922-D 1923 1924 1924-S 1925 1926 1927 1928 1928-D 1928-S 1929 1929-S 1930 1930-D 1932 1934 1935 1935-D 1936 1936-D 1937 1938 1938-D
Nice job!! I have gone through over $10,000 face value worth of pennies since mid January and have found 102/140 wheat pennies and all 1959-2010 in UNC. except the 1973-S.
Hi Merc, Here is my list. 1916 1918 1919 1919-s 1926 1928 1930-d 1934 1935 1935-d 1936 1936-d 1937 1938 1938-d 1939 1940 1940-s 1941 1941-d 1942 1944 1944-d 1944-s 1945 1945-d 1945-s 1946 1946-d 1946-s 1947 1947-d 1947-s 1948 1948-d 1949 1949-d 1950 (this might be my best looking wheat cent) 1950-d 1951 thru 1958-d, but just missing the 1954. Found these all roll searching, and in my change, and got some from my parent's change. This has all been in the last year. I roll search about 1 box of cents a week from my bank. Wasn't doing much roll hunting in the fall, but got back into it this winter. Thought I'd include a picture of the best looking wheat I've found so far too.
Nice work, dude, getting there... Here's my nicest I've found so far; '57-D. I'd grade it MS64ish. It's a real beauty. I find about one red per $500 I search. Also, I found the '18-S today, Another hole down.
