I would really appreciate your thoughts on this contest Paper Money Contest #4! In order for me to have future contest it will help me better understand the difficulty level based on the prizes offered. What are your thoughts on the questions, the prizes and how it was ran? Regards, RickieB
Rickie, I really liked the contest. Being somewhat new to paper money, it was highly challenging to me, especially since my only resource was basically the internet, and you tried to limit the internet's effectiveness in this contest. I learned a lot, though, about many different subjects (most interestingly to me was the military payment notes, didn't know there was such a thing). So in conclusion: Prizes -- great! (although I would still like to see one with an 1869 .50 cent fractional featuring Lincoln..lol) Difficulty -- Hard, but a very effective learning tool, not so hard that I just threw my hands up, but hard enough to make me work for the answers. Again, thanks a bunch for the contest, it's been my favorite contest so far! Jarrid
Well, since this was really my first foray into paper money, I found the questions fairly difficult to find answers to. But considering the prizes offered, I think the difficulty level was appropriate. I also liked the "equalizer" question for 21; even if the Noost had blown us all out of the water last night and finished the first 20 questions, we still would have had a full 24hrs to try and get our answers. The one thing that I would say as a beginner is that I would not mind a contest on my level that has more basic stuff about paper money which would probably attract more of the coin people who might be interested in paper money. Of course, the prize would not be as fantastic as the ones in this or your other contests, but it might help people like myself get into it a little more. Thanks for the contest, glad I was able to participate this time!
I like how the contest went. It's more than just quick searches and requires thought which promotes learning. Some answers and parts of answers could be found online, but requied thought and a little luck on how to get to the complete answer. Almost gave up on a few questions, but just couldn't and then found the answers by narrowing down book info then online search (such as the First pres. of American Banknote Co. question). One down fall, if you want to call it that, is the $1 rainbow note pic was not there when I found the link so I couldn't find the S/N(maybe it was somewhere else?). It did reappear in another thread and I liked how it was mixed in with other notes. I noticed some hints in recent replies to threads, no feeling either way on that. Prizes are great as always. Curious as to what the secret prize is. That was a nice addition. Once again, learned alot. Thank you!
Rickie, Even though I didn't participate, please don't count that as a negative. I find paper money beautiful ( especially the nice notes you place), and ancients interesting historically, but my main interest is U.S. Coins, and time for that is getting more and more limiting. You are doing an excellent job for the paper area, and I hope you will continue doing so. Jim
I agree with the statement by Wiggam007 about different levels, but not sure how it would work. Might get some sharks in the wrong level.
Yeah I noticed that too...a little too late, but I thought it was funny Cracked me up. I just wasn't smart enough to use it to my advantage. Jarrid
Some of my immediate thoughts on the contest: This was pretty darned hard for me, especially without much of a currency background nor having the appropriate reference books at my disposal. I had to rely on extensive web searches and spent a lot of time looking for high resolution images of notes so I could do the investigative answer work where needed. 48 hours was a bit of a 'cram test' high anxiety pressure felt state for me this weekend and I didn't have the full 48 hours at my disposal either. I estimate that your estimated 3-hours completion time took me about 10 hours of intense off-and-on work. One thing that was not an issue for me personally, but could be for some, are those who are not previously Heritage members and would need to first sign-up with an account (not sure if it's an issue for YNs under 18 to sign up on HA or not) and then needing to quickly familiarize oneself with how to navigate Heritage after signing up and setting out to retrieve answers to notes in question. Like I stated upon first seeing the "20" questions, there were actually 50 questions due to sub-questions within the 20 / 21 sections of questions. I can understand given the quality of the prizes to really make this hard earned and learned, but it was MUCH more than I'd thought I was getting into. Still, I enjoyed the challenge and tried my best to meet it. Overall, given the difficulty factor, I wasn't too keen on idea that those who answer the most questions correct and EARLIEST would be awarded above those who may have answered the same amount correctly, within the time allotted, but responded later than the first responders. Thanks again Rickie. I LEARNED A LOT!
Another thing I wanted to add to this thread, is that there were too many threads devoted to one contest. I think this added some unnecessary confusion into the difficulty level of the contest. The information being spread out like this was hard to follow in thread subscription updates, since accepting the contest challenge, as new threads kept being created and were necessary to track. So if someone joined the contest on one thread you might miss another thread or loose time working on the contest since you were not PM-ing contest info to the contest participants and previous threads were not being updated with new details or next steps in the contest. The links below are the various threads I was tracking for this contest from the outset I think I found them all!: Who is up for a New paper Money Contest? ***Rules for Paper Money Contest #4*** Element#1 Paper Money Contest #4 Paper Money Contest #4 Question # 21 PM Contest #4
I had to back out due to the time constriants, but felt I would have been able to learn a few things even though it was WAAAY, out of my league. I was still going to give it a go had I been able to. Does anyone think this would be unfair to someone that may have a better chance to win though?
I completely agree with this. I really liked the contest, and learned a lot. I'm really starting to like paper now after 2 contests :hail:. I really must pickup a currency redbook
Hello everyone... Thank you for the feedback so far! I appreciate it very much. I will take all replies into consideration and remark about them, positive or negative when I finish up the results. It was fun for me too as I learned alot as well. For the poster who request's a 50 cent Lincoln Fractional...in the grades that I like, one of those would be anywhere from $700 -$850 price range...when it get's to that level, it goes into the collection...sorry! I am happy to hear that most of you liked it...it is a lot of informatin to put together and organize..I tried to keep it separated as best as possible in order to prevent a big jumbled mess! Stay tuned for results to come.... I will say that only 6-7 out of 20 even attempted to submit answers.... This is why it takes so many to sign up....30% turn out is ok, however, considering the prizes, I thought it would have been more. Krispy...like life it self, organization is key in order to complete a task. I am sorry you felt this way, if it were all in 1 Thread it would have been a huge mess to sort out with even greater confusion. So if a person was interested in the contest, following all the leads so to speak is considered a must, in order to complete it. The Threads were simply added to elimininate jumbled messages....it does appear that you were able to follow it and did a pretty good job! :thumb: :thumb: Best regards, RickieB Regards
Rickie, I liked the contest and found it fun and learned a few thing that were in my reference books that I never took notice of till I had to look for the answers ,I used the INTERNET,BEP (SO Cards) & reference books to complete the test.Considering the nice prizes I think the difficulty factor of the contest was evenly matched . Thanks Rickie for the time & effort & the prizes.Hope you do it again .
Thank you Connor1 and to all of you who played. The objective to my contest is to bring to you a new area of Numismatics that you may not have considered before. With all the History, allure of Master Engraving, Artistry and collectability. I only hope this will lead to a growing number of collectors in the Paper Money Forum here at CT and ignite a passion in the young ones for years to come. Again...my thanks to you all....:thumb::bow: RickieB
well I have to say that you have succeeded. When I first came to this forum, I ONLY went to the U.S. Coins forum, but now the first thing I do when I sign is check the paper money forum, and although I still am active in collecting coins, my focus is more on U.S. paper money now. Thanks Rickie!
I also collect coins and like you commidaddy started looking at coins on CT,now I have almost focused my attention on Paper Money Forum,so Rickie you have converted a mostly coin guy over to a paper money guy.
I enjoyed the contest. I'm sure it took RickieB allot of time to put this contest together. I just ran into unforeseen problems that cut my research time very short. Lou
IMO...the contest was fitting of the prize. I think the questions were perfect and I don't feel there was any unfair advantage. Good job Rick
