:hatch:Just thinkin'. Spouse says I've too much time on my hands these days so I started digging through my old funny coins. Seems like folks here might understand. And I'm sure I can learn much here. So Thanks in advance. Question #1. Does anybody here know what a REAL 1887/8 Indian head cent looks like? Is it a variant or an error? And could this be one? Enough for now. This place looks like fun so I'm off to poke around in it for awhile to see what I can find.
First, Welcoem to CoinTalk. Second to correctly attribute a coin we need to see a picture. To post a pic, when you reply to a message just click 'go advanced' and scroll down to manage attachements. Click on the button, browse for the pics on your HD and click upload. Edit: Right on time!
Its fine to attach here. It doesn't appear to be any variety. But maybe a more trained eye can tell you more.:kewl:
This place is going to be FUNN! I've other '1888's and the last "8" on this one looked different to my hopeful eye. The Red Book seemed to have a 7 living next door in their example. And bogas replicas offered on eBay from Chine have them stacked up like a many layered wedding cake. Thank you for the rapid reply. Do you know where a proper example could be found? I asked at my local coin snob shop and he offered to ship it off for grading but what's the fun in THAT? He offered to interest me in some QUALITY INVE$TMENT stuff but I'm more of a hunter than a buyer. First I have to PAY to hand it over. Then if it IS it will be enshrined in a slab because it is too valuable to touch. I stumbled onto this place because of the name and now I wonder if I'll get sued by saying~ "Don't collect like my brother." to which some knowledgeable person replies~ "Don't collect like MY brother!"
I once thought I had one of these, but it just turned out to be a cud. The one you pictured doesn't look to be an 1888/7. Is there anything you see that we don't see? If you're starting to look for errors throughout your collection, I suggest you get loupes. You can pick them up on eBay or at a local store for a couple of bucks.
Hi and welcome to the forum! here is a posting of mine on the subject with photos. http://www.cointalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=535485&postcount=17 Jim
Most of the counterfeits I have seen are of the high rarity 1888/7 Snow 1 with exagerrated "7". Snow mentions in his book there are only about 30 of those known. The 1888/887 or 1888/7 ( some list) Snow S-2 is the one I think is mine above ( not certified) with the "bar" in the upper loop of the last 8, and visible repunched 88 in front of that. A diagnostic is the serif of a misplaced "1" protruding from the bead/neck. Reverse has a die crack from rim @ 7:30 through wreath to 9:30. However, there is debate as to if this is really a "/7". http://www.fly-inclub.org/is%20it%20an%20overdate.html The big money one sees listed for the 1888/7 is for the S-1. But be careful as I have seen the S-2 listed at the same pricing, but it is worth much less. Jim
Thank you Very Much for the photos. Most useful. What should I see on the Rev? Wait wait. Don't tell me. I'll pop it out on MY airtight, try for a better photo and hope it's there. Sorry about my image quality. Against my usual disregard I'm shooting through an airtight holder in this photo. (and yes, the container has some "scuzz" & scratches on it) So when I pop it out to re-shoot I'll look closer. And thanX again.:eat:
ThanX for the suggestion Ryan but for stuff like this I use loupes to read my computer. This one has perhaps a cud, too (or two). WoW. This place makes me realize I need to improve my photos. My Bad. Time to put the lights and gloves to this so I can take on the rest of the stack and really examine them.
Well, I tried the dishwasher, then the brillo pad. I still need to improve my Photos instead. :goofer: (Well...not of THIS coin).
Hi Dok and welcome to CoinTalk, any chance of seeing the entire coin? just because I like them no other reason LOL
It isn't the same obv die as Desertgem's S-2 and I believe the S-1 shows a lump at the lower left of the 8 which this does not.
