I'll buy them just to continue the series I have from the beginning, but the premiums are getting ridiculous. $48 for a clad half dollar.
I think the premiums are ridiculous across the board, but I might not be able to say "no" to that dollar.
Yeah but way too much money for my interest! Only 50,000 being minted but I'll have to pass, $718 for a $5 gold? Neun=nine on that idea!
i, like many collectors buy coins because they like them or they are bought for investment. When the Mint puts out their schedule, I got through it coin by coin to see if anything interests me or will fit in my registry. Every once in a while, the Mint will put out a coin or a coin set that fit in my registry. I try not to put an air that I am prejudiced, but there have many coins and coin sets that I have difficulty understanding their philosophy as to why the Mint made them. I assume that there is a bit of pressure to produce coins to appease a group of people, whether they are Mormons or Catholics or some other religion or even a man or woman. I would like to have coins with horses on them. I went wild in 1921 when the Mint had a gold and a silver coin with a horse on them. Then in 1923, they had a gold and a silver tree. Living in North Carolina, I've never seen or heard of that tree, so I went wild again and bought a gold coin with a tree and a silver coin with a tree. Now, we're in for another set of coins (I hope.). It seems that in the Fall/Autumn of 2024, the Mint is scheduled to mint a gold and a silver 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair coins. They look nice, but my budge may not allow my frivolous speeding. Anyway, we'll see. Anyone else going hog wild in 2024?
At 76 (as of December 20th) I seem to lose track of time, days, months, and years. Please change anything from 19XX to 20XX.
Dad (96 later this month) remembers people in his family getting quarter-eagles as Christmas presents. Probably before 1933.
I've discontinued all my subscriptions except the proof ASE that's coming out this month. Those I give to my grand children for Christmas, it's only 354 days away
Wow, I just looked! So...why does the silver dollar have a better design than the gold issue? Even on that it looks like she's a 1940's era mailman, delivering letters. The gold is also slightly debased.
The description said 90% purity, IIRC. The ancients would have considered that to be slightly debased. Poor Nero was reviled for having a 90% silver denarius. Looking at wikipedia, 90% seems to be the fineness of many American Eagles, so I guess there's nothing unusual about that. If I had to buy one, it would be the silver dollar.
I’ll be nice and say I’m saving my money for something better and I won’t be buying it from the mint.
