Impulse Buy: Stupid move or not?

I used to be an impulsive coin buyer, then this year focused my collecting on a few specific areas and have been successful in being patient and careful in my purchases. However, today I had a relapse. I bought something I never buy: a 2010 NGC graded PF70 UC AtB silver quarter set!

I really do not collect moderns except for a few things here and there from the Mint and have never really bought into the TPG modern phenomenon. I missed out on collecting the silver state quarters and see this as a way to start up the silver AtB series. I know that I could also just buy them from the Mint for much less money, but then again ...it was an impulse buy as I stated earlier. So, was this impulse buy a stupid move or not?

I have yet to see an "impulse buy" be a good one.

This one, in my opinion, is no different.

However, what I see as a good deal and what others see as a good deal can often be different, and in those cases it's the one doing the buying whose opinion really matters (as Treas suggested above).

On the other hand, you saw something that "spoke" to you and you seized the opportunity to buy it (impulse or not). It's really all up to you and what you think. Let's see how you feel in the morning.....:smile

Whats the point of those 70's you just bought?
If you are going to impulse buy, at least save yourself some money by getting 69's.
And like you said, you could've also saved yourself some money buying from the mint.
I wouldn't have bought them.

I've made a few impulse buys before. Some of them turned out to be big losers and others big winners. Just have to remember that this is a hobby and not a business and sometimes it's alright to buy what you like as long as your budget can handle it!!!

 

Topcat, if anybody here claims they haven't made a buy they later reconsidered, I'll show you a lair.

Did you overpay? Maybe. Don't let anybody bend you ear before you check if their outhouse wallpaper is Enron stock certificates. Or if they put $200 into a one armed bandit in Vegas.

 

what is done is done, whether it is a bad purchase or not depends on whether you regret it, not the day after, but a month down the road.

TC: It doesn't matter what we have to say whether you done right or wrong. It's your money, you're a grown up (or at least you're working on it, right? ), you're capable of making grown up decisions (with your money) and you are capable of living by the consequences of your decisions/actions.

You sound resolute in your focus to begin collecting in more specific areas. Good. You took a break today and bought something else. Good. You may well have another GOOD opportunity coming your way... I read this yesterday about the AtB coins and NGC labeling:

I cannot tell from looking at the stock picture on Paradise as to which labels NGC has in use with your coins. In the funny ways of coin collectors and especially those people who buy into the 70 graded coins or who pursue special designations on slabbed coin's labels, you may well receive NGC graded coins that do not bear the Register Trade Mark on the AtB labels. Now, I wouldn't buy the coins because of this anymore than I'd personally put out $169.99 for them, but someone else might, particularly if there appears to be a difference on future NGC labels later on.

Knowing this, you could of course exploit :secret: this situation. You could opt to sell the coins later and buy others for less with your profit, should such an opportunity arise. You could also sell them and roll that money into your 'specific focused' area of collecting later on. If not, should nothing ever come of the Mint's bossing around NGC over the labels or you decide to hold onto these coins, you are a collector at heart and your passion drove you, beyond any rational insight that anyone can make to prove your actions right or wrong.

Never spend time worrying about yesterday. As you get older you'll realize not enough time left to think worry about maybe, could have, should have, might have, etc. Yesterday's gone and so are bad, good, great mistakes and decisions.
If you had an impulse to buy something and did, it's all over now and you never know, tomorrow you may be happy you did. Of course you may hate yourself too.
I too am an impulse buyer. I remember thinking of buying a car I saw for sale. The price was great, the car looked fantastic, so I bought it as an impulse and never regreted that decision at all. Of course I've purchased other cars with that same impulse and really got burned. Yet I never look back at the bad, only the goods. Like I said, not enough time left to acquire Ulcers along with everything else.
I go to coin shows all the time and sure wish I had a little monster on my shoulder saying NO, NO, NO when I drool over some coin(s) I really don't want. Yet when I get home, there they are and to late to look back now.

 

That's how much you know about Las Vegas. Nearly all of the slots today are multiline videos, and all you do is push buttons. The "one-armed" bandits have been working all of the buses for years, and they can pick your pocket easier than most wives. (No offense ladies!)

PS. I've never made a buy that I reconsidered, but I have made some where I was cheated.

 

I appreciate all of the responses and agree that what's done is done. I really think that much of my impulsivity today was due to simple boredom. I have not purchased anything in a little while, lost out on a few auctions at the last minute, and also have been underwhelmed with what the Mint has been offering on their site lately. This impulse buy may be stupid or not (only time will tell for sure) but regardless it has helped me to realize that I need to keep focused. Thanks! TC

 

If these 2010s will be as low mintage as the 99 silver proof sets, it might be worth it. On the other hand, you could have just about bought a 99 silver proof state quarter set for that much. The most expensive of the series and "somewhat" rare, possibly getting rarer, for good sets left in mint packaging. The key set to the series.

I do like the labels. But, when considering if something was a good deal or not, I often try to imagine what I could turn around and sell it for on ebay.

I have no idea what they go for on ebay but I'm guessing you would be disappointed if you tried.

Impulse shimpulse...as long as YOU are happy, thats all that matters.

 

It doesn't get better than a 70 from a market standpoint.
No coin will ever be a MS/PF70 though. A perfect coin, that is what 70 means. And that is impossible. Every coin has an imperfection.
The 70 grade, to even be given out is just a big hoopla, and doesn't mean much, to anybody, unless you want to say that you own a perfect set of something, when you could've had 69's that look the same for the same price!
Or unless if you are doing a registry set and you want to be on top, then of course, buying 70's does make sense, but at some point you have to buy the coin for your joy of collecting versus the joy of a registry, but hey, some people, including myself, have that competitive drive in them.

So back to what you said, yes 70 is the best you can get, but no 70's are the best, and 70's aren't 70's forever. They will eventually get some kind of spots on them, or tone. TPG holders aren't air-tite, and nature will always leave its mark.
