Hi everyone, I've just registered in this forum. I'm Italian and I recently moved to the US for work. I have a question: I have just bought some coins in a uk auction. Medieval italian bronze coins. If I want these coins shipped to the US will I need to pay duty taxes? Are these kind of coins free from any import restrictions? Will i need to pay sales taxes? I live in Florida. The value is considerable for me. Above 1000 $ Thanks a lot, Kunz
Interesting question this one because I myself am from the UK and have bought coins from other European countries, but have never paid tax on them when returning back home. I will be following this conversation.
I believe that collector coins are exempt from customs duty taxes. I recently bought a Canadian coin from a Canadian dealer and wasn't charged. Discussed here also: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/customs-and-duties-for-coins-imported-into-us.194912
Thanks! I saw already that thread. So to avoid the restriction coming from the MOU between Italy and US it is enough to specify the type of coins to the carrier? In theory there is no risk of confiscation?
I buy coins from the Ebay Italia all the time, at least 3 per month and I have never been charged any duty taxes. I also buy coins from France, Spain, and England and I have never had to pay any taxes on them. These are coin in the $40-$150. range.
I have bought from all over the globe, many from the UK, and living in America, I have never encountered any kind of a problem. No type of import tax that I know of. Maybe if the amount is declared by the shipper, and it is very very high, and it contains lots of insured gold, it may be inspected, but not taxed, as far as I know. For large amounts of gold there may be some special import laws, search Google for this, but it probably refers to bulk gold like 200 bars etc.. But still no import problems or duties or fees or taxes. We like it that way. I just bought from Ireland, and there was nothing added to the post. Welcome to our country, travel and soak it in, I hope you grow to love it, and to appreciate its many earned freedoms.
In more than 40 years of purchasing overseas, I have never been assessed a customs duty for purchases through the international mails into the USA. I know our European friends have these kinds of taxes, but not here in America.
At least there's sth we have and you don't When buying coins from the U.S. I am charged by German customs, but when I send coins to people in the U.S. they never get charged. Not sure though what happens if their value exceeds $1000.
There are no customs duties on coins imported into the US. There should be no sales tax, Since you are in Florida and not the EU, you don't have to pay the 15% VAT either. Ordinarily you would owe the Florida Use Tex on purchases made outside the state, but since I don't believe FL charges sales tax on coins the Use Tax probably wouldn't apply either.
Just a little update of my shipment! And of course an opportunity to share my anxiety! Package was shipped on 13th july with tracked and signed international registered of royal mail. Arrived us on 15th july; left USPS sorting facility in Garden City NY on 17th july.... and then no news on USPS tracking.... 4 days with no update I am in Miami.... Of course I am starting to get nervous! Usps does not answer to customer service. I have sent a requesto fo information through the website but still no answer! Any suggestion? it is normal this delay in delivery?? Thanks!
