Pay pal is exceptionally dangerous and should only be used by sellers who know exactly what can go wrong and how to handle it. Unfortunately, it is the preferred payment method of many eBayers, forcing many sellers to accept it even though it seriously adds to the expense and risk of selling on eBay.

I will be honest...unless it is a very expense, special item...for average everyday buys...if they dont accept paypal...I wont use them. Its just the easiest way to pay...Once in a blue moon I will bid on something, win it, then I realize they dont accept pay-pal...I try to see payment methods before bidding to avoid those who dont accept it...

Thing is...I pay for online purcahses with a credit card...I have one just for this purpose...it makes it very easy for me to keep track of everything. I ONLY have a credit card connected to my pay-pal account, I have never entered a bank account as I dont want anyone to have access to that.

that place seems to be shilling a paypal alternative which allows you to accept credit cards on line...at least 2 links to the place on the front page...

I dont care if its paypal as long as I can use my credit card I have set up just for online payments.

I found paypal to be easy and trouble free. Maybe I'm the exception. Twice I have gotten my money back from them when purchasing from an electronics store and once from Ebay. With Ebay actually banning the seller. Crossing my fingers now. Thanks for the heads up.

eBay spends enormous amounts of time and effort trying to convince buyers that Paypal is the only way to go. They would of course do better protecting us from scam sellers, but that doesn't fit the business plan.

Paypal competitors including Google's alternative, however, are dismissed out of hand as "too risky." Too risky to who?

I buy and sell on e-bay and much prefer paypal for conveience. As a buyer I use a credit card as another layer of protection. I feel sellers are much more at risk by people doing chargebacks thru the cc company.

I know of at least 1 person over here in New Zealand who has been stung big time by PayPal,who ripped some money out of their account & ended up freezing the account. It was a massive nightmare trying to get things sorted out.

Well, let me answer my own question... Paypal alternatives, assuming that they use the same general model, are most risky to Paypal/eBay itself in my opinion...

Oh, yes, I am completely hypocritical on this as well. I will buy using Paypal but I have stopped selling there since you're basically stuck with taking it given the way eBay hypes it and trashes alternatives (e.g. "Personal Check - No Buyer Protection Available / Money Order - No Buyer Protection Available" the validity of which I won't get into).

As I have found less and less of interest on eBay lately it's no great loss to ignore it. I'm sure I'm passing up the occassional "good deal" :hammer: :goofer: but hey, I can't get to every coin show or dealer either!

I buy more than I sell on E-bay. I do like the convenience of instant payment, and it is hassle free. I guess the expenses involved with selling keeps me inline with my senses. I don't like giving them money from every angle. I also have passed on auctions that don't accept PayPal. I am starting to figure out why they pass on PayPal.
