hey ct I've been collecting paper money for about 4 years now and I just noticed last weekend that I have got quite a piece going here. I'm very interested in "star notes" and I pluck almost every single one I come across. I have gone through countless straps of $2's as at my place of work, that's what we use daily. I've never sold any part of my currency collection and never even thought to sell any of it. Just keep it for future family to oo and aa over like me =D But I had the thought...hey I can use that money to go back to college.. I wrote down all the info possible on almost all of my collection, I've got the better looking stuff at the bank. So I'm wondering if: a. Have any other CT members felt weary or ..got a weird gut feeling when thinking about selling any part of your collection. b. How nice of a premium is there on Star's and Fancy serial Stars/Fancy serial regular notes? - I've seen on eBay a weird difference in the price of paper money. c. Would eBay be the way to go when aiming for top dollar for my $$? d. Could I get an estimate from anyone schooled in the pricing of these sorts of things for a few of my pieces. Pictures upon request Thank you so much for taking the time to look at this...I'm just sitting here thinking.. "Hey..I've got a lot here and I don't need to hoard it all, I can save alot for my future generations but I don't need it all...I can maybe get enough to pay for some schooling and or travel." Best wishes and Happy Forth to those of our USA users!:thumb:
There's a lot of variables to consider. If "plucking" means circulated notes (modern-era) and the bulk of them are $1's and $2's, and only unless they are full ladders, 12345678, solid, 22222222, or super radar, 30000003, then probably not much more than face value. Some price guides show prices for 2 or 3 different conditions, (VF, CH-CU, and GEM) and some just show CH-CU. Get a price guide, or check auctions archives for past prices paid. If you want to post photos, we could all give you a better estimate on your examples. Some particular series and districts are worth more than others, and most $1 and $2 collectors, (that I know) want uncirculated notes with good centering. Sorry to hear that you're giving thought to selling your collection.
Thank you for your input Steve! First, I am only thinking of selling a couple notes! =] I just don't want to dip into the money I'm saving for traveling the world - all the money I earn daily. Just thinking it'd be cool to brush up on my languages and earn a degree haha. By plucking I mean going through straps we pick up from the bank weekly. And alot of what I see is straight from the hands of jesus himself, no one's collection but mine baby. Yet. I've got notes in mind like say something like 00125125* and something like 22332233. I've got notes that have serial numbers off center. I'll take a few photos of what I have handy for yall. Steve I hope you're free for a few more minutes yet. Thank you again.
From my very limited experience with notes, paper collectors are a lot fussier about condition. A local dealer has had a g-vg battleship sitting in his shop for months now priced at 150. The freidberg book has em going for over 300 in vg. I like it, but I would like it more if it did not look so used, creased. I think when a person has a dirty stained note out of circulation and they decide to wash it, the note becomes as limp as a dishrag.

Thank you for your input! =D I love crisps notes just as much as the next but, but I also like to see an old, well-used note and wonder what it's life has been like. I know that dealers and buyers love to have mint pieces, and I have what they want! I know you see a few tattered pieces from my pictures but those are just the ones I snapped. Alot of the goodies are in the saftey deposit box because I was away. On another note. haha If I have a set..say.. 22332233 22332244 22332255 22332266 and so on..would it be wiser in everyone's past experience and knowlege, to sell the set a whole or pieced up?
I'm just rambling on trying to do soooo many things at once. I hope you know what I'm getting at haha. But would a set like that be worth more as a whole or sold off individually? What have you experienced when selling a mass of one type of currency maybe a lincoln set or notes from different Reserves..sell em as a whole or one at a time? You're the best Steve. From Tampa.
Generally a note is considered an error note worth collecting if the third printing (serials and seals) are touching the lettering. Slight shifts are generally not worth any premium. That said, your San Francisco 00420...* would be interesting since star notes are replacements of errors. Other than this note, I don't think the slight shift would command anything significant. As for selling notes, I try not to do that, but have done so on occasion, specifically Confederate notes. I always regret selling it at one time and point, but decide to move on afterwards.
Your comment is very much appreciated! I thought the star error note was definatly a keeper, so I swiped up a couple more just like it. I have a bunch of star notes stashed up and theres a couple books of ones that are sequential. Theres some sequential repeaters too. I kind of would feel bad about selling them, but know, just like a lot of things I'd move on. It would also be going to another collector so that's kind of cool.
I have no notes with the number arrangement like yours. The last couple photos I posted are that of 22332200 - 22332299 03170950* - 03170960* How did you get the notes in that photo?
Thank you. A very NICE Number as Three One's Middle of 9 then another three Ones then Asterisk.. 0 111 9 111 *:thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:
I second that. Today I came across a few notes I found to be very cool. No photos as of now, but they are crisp, uncirculated $2. Serial numbers : F03232626A(not so much when I got home..but eh what the hey) F99378293A F99428293A F99503293A F99553293A Actually..now that I'm home, this first note I listed, isnt uncirculated..It's got a wheresgeorge stamp on it =/ But those other notes I thought were neat and they were sequential in the strap. Series 1976 Atlanta GA.
