    Ok, I'm buying a pistol.

This has been a difficult decision for me but it has a reason. I have several firearms, six to be exact. Two 22's, a BlackPowder 50 Caliber, My dads (ahem, souvenir) gun from WWII, a Remington Model 7; 308 caliber, and a Remington Model 700 BDL; 7mmMagnum. Oops that's seven, but never owned a pistol :) The are kept in a locked gun cabinet in the basement and we sleep on the 2nd floor, the house has 2 stories and a basement. We live WAY out in the country off a dirt road.

Anyway to the story. A couple of months ago I had my TOTAL collection out because I was inventorying it on an Excel program. One of my wife's friends and her husband dropped by and she just walked them into the basement to show them the cool coins I had out all over the place :( Now this sadly just happened to be one of her friends who... How shall I say this delicately? Ah, think money is for spending and NOT collecting and I quote, "Man, your a fool for collecting all these pretty little coins when I could trade them in on BEER, LOLOLOLOL." No problem, they got a good look-see at my collection and left with a little bit of knowledge. Gold was INDEED once used as money and not just on TV...

Well, this past weekend we had to run into town (Rapid City) and see this same couple in order to pick up their daughter for a slumber party. Seems Ron had taken her to work with him so we had to run over to the Water Treatment Plant where he worked to pickup their daughter. When we walked in it was pretty cool, but then a grungy looking fellow (really) actually came up to me and asked if I really had gold out where I lived. I said "No who told you that?' he says, "Ron told us all you had a gold mine out there..." Now I was MADDER than a wet cat I'll tell you then. I lit into Ron when I got him alone and read him the Riot-Act. Now let me explain quickly the make-up of the work force at this County owned water treatment plant. They are sent there when they have time to WORK-OFF for minor crimes by the county. Kinda like a trustee program. They make less than minimum wage and if they have a six month sentence they must work out there for that period, but they can go home or wherever at night.

Well, we leave and there must have been 100 pairs of eyes on us as walked out. Now, you see why I'm buying a handgun.

I'd have been madder than heck!...at the guy...and probably pretty upset at the wife too (if she knew what you were doing down there). Of course, I don't know that my wife would think twice about it either. I'd better have a chat with her. Well, I'd make sure you keep those doors locked, the coins in the safe when you're not there and yes, a handgun isn't a bad idea as it may take a while to load up the ol' black powder under pressure. ;)

Just a cautionary bit of advice, more people are interested in parting you with your weaponry than they are with parting you of your numismatic treasures.:secret: So not a good idea to share what you have there either.

Never a good idea to let anyone know you have a weapon. Let them find out only when you are ready to despatch them to their maker.

Oops, I forgot to mention the Remington 11-87; 12 Ga. Shotgun. Well I got
it, or will have it in 5 days. It's a Kimber CDP Custom II Looks a lot
like a Colt 45 and shoots the same ammo. We do have a secure safe deposit
box which is hidden pretty good, but if they find it all they have to do is
carry it out to the get-away-vehicle.

I'm a hunter by nature and have NEVER felt the need for a handgun, but my feelings are different now for some reason...

I'd invest in a safe deposit box at a bank [for the highest valued stuff] and a safe [for the rest] before buying a handgun. The gun is only good if you (1) stay home 24x7x365, (2) are willing to kill someone without remorse, (3) wear the gun day and night for the rest of your life, and (4) are 100% certain that you'll get off the first shot.

I also usually leave some cash and coins out in the open when I'm not home for any burglar to find and take -- sort of a fake coin collection with enough there to fool someone who doesn't know exactly what to look for. It's better to let them walk out with some easy gains and discourage them from ripping the place apart and trying to crack the safe. You could buy a few of those commemorative fake double eagle tribute coins and put them into 2x2's. It's unlikely a burglar could tell they weren't the real thing until they sold them, and then they would probably think you were the fool, not them.

Chuckle, I kinda like some of the ideas you have. The wife's business is right here or in a building right next to the house, so someone is here all the time, more-or-less. When we leave for long periods I have a friends son stay here to feed the animals and keep an eye on things.

I've been thinking about getting a handgun for a few years now and now I have one. I was able to get my 'concealed weapons permit" already today. Just gotta wait for the paperwork to go thru and I'll be busting cans in the BadLands.

Bottom line is, I'd die to protect what's mine; Family or Property...

Have you decided on the type of handgun you want to get yet? me I would favour a revolver ok I know they dont hold as much as a auto but they tend to jamb less LOL also you need to take into account the type of load a drop of mercury comes to mind here for each shell :kewl: Of course another quite frightning addition would be to keep a couple of fruit spiders along with your gold love to see somones face when one of those starts to walk up his hand LOL

Kimber maks a GREAT gun, a tab bit expensive tho. The .45acp is the ultimate round for stoping people. Just ask any older Vet what they think about the US military switching over to the 9mm. my advice is simply this, 1) Be concious of where you are gonna shoot , That round is WAY powerfull and may travel thru walls 2) don't pull it unless you intend to use it. PERIOD. you wouldn't want to lose you collection and be shot by your own firearm. I to believe in my right to bear arms and will do what ever I need to to protect my family and ensure they do not go hungry. God forbid it should happen but I am prepaired mentally to make that decision.

I would think REAL hard about keeping anything in a bank safe deposit box as the new Patriot Act will change your mind immediately. All the government has to do is declare Marshall Law for any reason or another and all those valuables will go to the government the minute you open the box, under supervision with Marshall Law. Most Americans don't realize what the Partriot Act really is and won't know until its too late. Ask your coin dealer about it!

I would look into home security alarms and insurance.

You know, having a pistol can actually make matters worse, not better - even under the most ideal circumstances.

I would be very mad at your wife's friend...

I always tell people (like cable guys, handy men, sales people, religious door to door folks): I'd like to let you in, but my dog does bite, and I can't have another law suit against me right now - and the police told me if it happened again, I would have to put the poor guy down.

totally untrue - my dog barks at company, then runs down stairs and tinkles in the basement, BUT he barks loud.

LOL, sadly a home security system is no good when you have a Rural Route address "Hello, this is ADT, are you aware your house is being broken into, how do we get there?"

The wife also apologized profusely after they left. She didn't know I had my collection out. Ron... well Ron is the type of fellow who was born with a dent in his head I think. He epitomizes the (Peter Principle) with his supervisory position at the Water Treatment Plant.

I have my 'ol buddy, my Assault Rifle loaded with a nice 30 round clip of 7.62 full metal jackets. Won't do me any good if I'm gone but if I'm there that poor intruder is in for one hell of a surprize.:)

Honestly, I'd rather have a dog to protect my coins. I own guns, and continue to use them. But believe it or not, studies have shown that crooks fear dogs more than guns. A bullet will go straight, so you can hide behind the fridge until the homeowner runs out of ammo. The dog, however, will chase you behind the fridge and lay a pretty good bite on you.

My brother and a parishoner of mine were both attacked by dogs, and I've been shot (how many ministers can say that?), and I'd rather be shot.

Just remember, if you are forced to shoot someone, aim for center mass (chest). Anyone who suggests that you "shoot to wound" is wrong. Accuracy during a stress situation can be poor, so aiming for the middle of your target will insure the best chance of a hit. And practice, practice, practice.
