Illyria, Apollonia, AR Drachm. ca 229-30 BC, Agias (Moneyer), Epikadou (Magistrate), 3.3g, 18mm OBV: AΓIAΣ, Cow standing left suckling calf. REV: AΠOΛ EΠI KA ΔOY, Legend around double stellate pattern. A control mark outside of first circle border. REF: BMC 15-16 (pending) I believe the impression from another coin on the obverse is not a double strike, but maybe it was from other coins fused together in a clump. Not 100% sure on that. I believe I have the details right for the coin. There are a few issues though. For one, I don't believe I have the double stellate pattern lined up right. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate it. And also, the BMC 15-16 could very well be right for this coin except that mine has some type of control mark so I doubt the reference ID is right on. I'd appreciate some help with this coin. This was another coin that was sitting in my desk only because this was not the right coin I was supposed to get from a dealer, he sent the wrong one. I was rather annoyed about it since this one is of lower grade and there it set in my desk for a long time. No more. It's being taken care of now.
I'm not entirely sure Gil, but my seller photos have it (double stellate pattern) arranged as follows:
A friend on Facebook gave me this link to these coins with a lot more information. A l lot of dealers post them differently, so I don't say anyone is wrong, nor right. http://www.beastcoins.com/Greek/Illyria-Apollonia/Illyria-A-D.htm
I own one as a novelty and know very little about this series. The image here is what the seller posted:
Looks like some of my questions are being answered with this link. http://www.beastcoins.com/Greek/Illyria-Apollonia/Illyria-A-D.htm
Got one and now have it I'Ded right on my forvm gallery thanks to the link posted. Thanks, Gil Apollonia, Illyria, Greece, (200 - 80 B.C.) AR Drachm O: APIΣTΩN (moneyer), cow left, head turned, suckling calf right. R: double stellate pattern within double linear square with sides curved inward. 3.2g 17.5mm
I see a doublestrike on the reverse since the frame lines do not align properly making it seem possible that the first strike was a partial brockage which the strikers corrected by overstriking. It could be die damage from a severe clash but that does not explain the double reverse details.
still more coin for GG! awesome sir! that one is on my list, pretty high. i've just got to find the right one when i've got the money to blow.
I picked one of these up a while back, not knowing a lot about them but thinking it looked cool. Still one of my favorite Greek coins. Illyria, Apollonia. Ca. 250-200 B.C. AR drachm (15.8 mm, 3.34 g, 5 h). Timen and Damophontos, magistrates. TIMHN, Cow standing right with suckling calf; ΓAK monogram below / AΠOΛ ΔAMOΦΩNTOΣ, Double stellate pattern. Ceka 115; BMC 14; Mionnet 19. Image copyright Agora Auctions http://AgoraAuctions.com
