Today was another coin show in a town called CountrySide, Illinois. I had a choice of going to this coin show, a gun show, opening of two different outdoor flea markets, indoor flea market or just staying home and saving money. So naturally I went to the coin show. I got there about 15 minutes before it was supposed to open and it was crowded already. Why don't people go by the start time so I could be without all the corwds? This is a great place for a coin show because the washrooms are clean, lighting is great, parking is abundant and free, entrance to the show is free, easy to find the place, Large room with plenty of aisle space. As usual the great majority of buyers were elderly people. Some younger ones, a few YNs and a few females. One dealer had a large display of jewerly and I asked how come and she said she sells more of that than the coins. Possibly many men feel guilty when spending so much on a coin so feel they should bring home a sorry about that gift. There is always a lady at the gun shows around here thatdoes the same thing. About 90 or so dealers and several were selling currency. This is actually a coin and currency show. This place is only about 12 miles from home so not a bad trip each month. One dealer told me the coin market is so booming that a few years ago he would gross $100,000 for the entire year and now does that each month. As usual I spent to much money on coins so left about 10AM. Also, as usual I purchased everything from basically the same two dealers. It was way to crowded by then anyway. I never realized how many places sold food until the ride home from the coin show this morning with out having breakfast. Every corner seamed to have a place for food. Another coin show new Sunday but probably will be a dud because of Easter. Hope every one had as great a weekend as I did.
This is the largest coins show in the area I used to go quite a bit, they have a National Show I believe once a year where the entire place is slammed full of dealers. Buyers beware this is also I the place I paid over $300 for a $50 dollar coin. I guess that is what is so frustraighting about this beloved hobby. I don't know nearly enough to buy from some of these guys and they sometime Knowingly misrepresent there wares for the almighty buck, Had I not lost my job for 6 months and had to rely on my collection for food and the mortgage I may have never realized how badly I was taken. And this is only one example of the fraud I have found. I would love more than anything to establish a relationship with 1 or 2 dealers that want to sell a coin at a fair price and then be willing to accept it back at the same grade or close to the same price. I understand they have overhead and I am fine with that, but when a dealer sells you an AU coin and you offer it back to them they tell you it is a F, XF sometimes that is a GIANT price difference. As a single income of 4 I cant take those risks on a regular basis. Thanks for listening Buy the way if you do have the knowledge this is a great show!!
