Looking for advice or info. I've already kinda perused the Ike Group and Google on this. I have a PF69DCAM 1971-S, PCGS certified which I bought some years ago. In looking at it more closely now, it has a peg leg on the R in LIBERTY. I don't see really anything more on this one than the peg leg. I am looking to see where I would have to go to have this authenticated as a variety or error as it is slabbed but not with any designation on it. Or if this is a known minted one that has no real significance to Ike collectors. Here is one pic of the R. I see absolutely no serif on this one to the left (on the E side).
From another post here, in 2015, @19Lyds wrote: Can anyone tell me more about these first mintings? Really hard to search this forum for this as all the words like Ike, peg, leg, etc. are just too "small" to use as search words and so limits how to get info on these.
I don't know if you are a member of the Ike Group and have seen this page already https://www.ikegroup.info/?page_id=228
I don't know if this is what you're asking, but search Heritage archives for "1971-S peg" and all three major TPGs certify them, mostly under FS-401.
expat already posted a link to the ike group and you mentioned you've looked as well.. I went through the same thing a year or 2 ago when I picked up my 71s pegleg. Real neat to know about but if already slabbed not worth enough to bother sending it back in as there is no real premium on em here's mine is also pr69dcam
Thank you all. This was a really quick conclusion to my query. I have now the info that I need, in that this is a cool-ish type of thing to know about, and I am glad I do, but there is no premium on this 'variety'. But I will say that a Proof 69DCAM is pretty spectactular to see, visually it is a beautiful coin.
Interesting. I can't help because I'm new to this. I did pull a mint slabbed 71-S Proof out of an inherited box and found the same shaped R. Sorry for the lack of photography skill.
@IrishLuck Looks like for this year and type of coin (proof), this peg leg is just a minor 'variety' as maybe 25-28 percent of all of them have this version on the R. So no premium for this type on this year and mint mark. Others may not be the same.
"many" others in this case if you look at the ike group they have a pic that shows the progression from full to almost gone like your example
I'm sending all my peg leg to the new CAC grading service for grading and attribution as soon as JA says i can. He will be grading ike proofs and I'm sure attributing this variety. I have several 71s
I have some that might be worthwhile to get into there sometime in the next couple years. Depends on if I keep the ones I have or move them on out. I am in the process of considering to sell some of my coins as well as gifting some out. I find that my interestes in coins change at times. I still do like Ikes, though.
