What do you honestly think of this IHC? Grade, comments. I like it - but not sure if it is what it was advertised as. My scans are not as good as some others.

    Thanks

Can you enlarge the pic a bit and post one of the reverse ?

I think so - after midnight last night that original scan looked huge, and now it is so small. Lets try again - if this does not work will have to try after work.

I'll give it an AU-58. Very nice penny.

It looks like the photos from the seller on Ebay that only sells NTC slabs....is this in a NTC slab??

I'm going to say AU58...but it might get a lwo MS grade.

Actually this is a NNC slab - was advertised as proof. And since I am not *shy* about possible mistakes - I paid about 150 for it several months back. I have also found that on ebay the prices for these NNC slabbed coins have more than doubled to what I consider outlandish prices for the coins. And really my scans do not do the coin justice - either I need a new scanner or maybe some hints. I must admit that when I compare it to the NGC and PCGS (ms grades) IHC I have this coin is equal to them. And for some reason I like the BN better than I do the reds. I could not find good comparisons when I bought the coin, but still happy to have it. I think I will figure out how to crack it out of the slab and visit the local coin shop to get their opinion. I know that having the coin in hand would help, but I think(notice I said think) it is a solid MS on details.

Unless I'm really missing it the coin isn't a proof...

I do not think you are - I thought the price was not bad for the coin. I never paid attention to what was on the slab. From the scans it looked MS, so I did my best to figure in the what a red would go for - not real scientific like. And now it seems like all of the IHC auctions are getting ridiculous. From the other MS coins you can see a difference - but that does not make it proof, one of the reasons I posted it. Actually I can't wait to get home and crack it out of the slab - and not damage it. :)

It looks to be a dipped out proof to me. Stay away...Mike

I'd say it has a shot at a 60 or 61, not much higher.

I've seen some pretty nasty IHC proofs before. Made me scratch my head and wonder how they determined it was a proof (NGC/PCGS/ANACS).

Regardless of it being a proof or not this coin looks to be dipped. The color just isn't natural.

Okay - I believe it is dipped also. I scanned another one I have listed as red and it matches the colors on heritage. This two from NNC just seems to be a little off - so i think they are both dipped. Plan on taking them to the dealer this weekend just to confirm it. If nothing else I want to list them in my inventory correctly.

I cracked both of them out of the slab - that was an adventure itself.

I'm not into varieties, errors and such - so I could be off base here. But if that is a Proof, it's the first one I've seen with what looks like clash marks. So I think it's a business strike. I would agree about the coin having been dipped, but I see no signs of wear. I also see no signs of luster, but that could be the pics. But if the luster isn't there then I'd have to go with a very low MS detail grade. And I think the top TPG's would bodybag it.

Update - took 4 of my indian heads down to the coin shop today. I asked him to just look at them and let me know which were the best and his opinion. He took 4/5 minutes to study them - lined them up and said - the 1895 has the best redness, these other two are faded and the last has been cleaned or dipped. The one that he said was dipped was the 1891 penny. I then directly asked him about the 1881 and proof. He looked at it again and said he thinks with the rims it has it might be proof. He also said he does not think it was dipped or cleaned - the color is just weak. Thought I would give an update - no to do another post on my new large cent.
