I received a 1980 5 Ptas coin in change today. I know absolutely nothing about Foreign Coins. I don't even know how much it would exchange for. I hope a quarter since that is what it should have been in my change. It is cool though and I will probably keep it. It has a soccer ball on the back. I assume this is a Spanish coin as it says Espana. It has an 82 on the reverse and a star with an 80 in it. Why so many numbers? I didn't take alot of time taking pics. If better ones are needed let me know. Thanks in advance!
Here is some info. on your coin. Spain 1980, 5 Pesetas Mintage 75,000,000 Its a commemorative issue for the soccer player on the coin.
The coin was minted in 1980, and back in those years (until about 30 years ago) Spain used a "dual date" system on its coins. The year underneath the king's portrait (four digits) is the authorization date, the year in the star (two digits) is the year when the coin was minted. Yours is from (19)80; others have (19)81 or (19)82. In 1982 the Football World Cup was in Spain; that is why it says "España '82" and shows a ball and a globe. This was a circulating commemorative coin referring to the Cup. If you wanted to get that coin redeemed in Spain, the central bank would give you 3 cent for it; it's worth €0.03 in today's money. A collector may be willing to pay a little more ... Christian
Thanks for the info. I am not a collector of foreign coins, but I do have a few. I will just add this one to those. It's pretty cool. I would rather have it than $0.03 anyway. Thanks again!
