There's a thought - top quality gold would be the long-term investment choice!

Having said that it would be great to attempt a full set of Napoleonic medals to allow documentation to be done for the first time. There are thousands with restrikes from several different periods.

Also a full set of Napoleonic coins etc for France, Italy Spain, Westphalia, Holland etc - as far as I know this has never been done either, or even close.

Another impossibility is a full set of Spanish and Spanish colonial pillars and portraits, reales and escudos.

May take several life-times though even with the money :D

    That would be dead bore....

Having too much money at once would kill the desire and the pleasure of the hunt. Look at those exceptional collections of roman and/or greek gold that are put together by billionaires within two years or less. They're very soon to be re-auctioned, for a profit, the following year or so

Things you don't even have desired for a while are emotionally, if not financially, worthless.

Not that I wouldn't like to have a bit more money to buy coins I can't afford though :)

I remember when a "what if you had a million" was good enough for threads.
This inflation is out of control!

Anyway, I would buy every top three grading company number one, highest grade, US type coins from the owners and spend the rest of my life patting myself on the back in front of a mirror.

    I guess I would need a billion now, wouldn't I?

The obvious starting point. I would then move on to the @Tejas collection since that is how my interests run.

I would say that is true for the "investor" types. But for average collectors like you and I/ most who post on CT/ the main reason behind our passion is the pleasure we derive from our collections. Eric Newman was an example of a very rich man/ who was a true coin collector. He probably holds the record for being involved in coins for 100 years. The "Tyrant" another true collector. The only "negative" to having that kind of money, is that I would spend most of the day glued to sixbid/ looking for desirable targets/ then sitting thru the drawn out auction to win them. Of course you still have to be carefull not to bid at all costs/ the money would runout quickly. A Billion is only 1000 Millio IMG_1340.JPG IMG_1341.JPG IMG_1342.JPG n/ there are thousands of Million dollar + coins out there/ some into 10+ territory. I would not be stupid to spend 20M on a 33 Double Eagle/ I am happy with a MS-66+ 1927 ex. at $2200:) I would spend a M on a 1683 Michal Apafi AV 100 Dukaten (Transylvania) or 100K+ for Postumus/ Laelinus/ Quintillus/ Alexander of Carthage Aurei in MS. But, I would still collect MS gold in the 500-1000 range. Also, my collection would be housed in a special secure room/ so I could look at them every day:)

My ultimate Holy Grail" coin would be the Kingdom of Aragon AV 50 Enriques struck by Enrique IV in 1471. That coin is heavenly!!!!!

Well, geeze, if I'd known we were talking a mere short-scale "billion", I wouldn't have wasted my time opening the thread. Go long or go home!

This was my thought as well. When things are too easy to get you don't value them as much. I often think about how much more I appreciated things before venues like eBay and Amazon allowed me to buy everything I want as long as I had the money. If I could just go in and buy the whole coin store I think I'd get tired of it quickly.

    Personally, I would have ball. Now, I could all of a sudden go after all the coins, I dream to own/ but can never afford in a million years. Like these 20 Dukaten pieces from Regensburg/ Salzburg/ Bern/ Basel/ Sachsen:D I would never get bored...... a91038aea20a8755c2f24a5f0277134b (2).jpg bc8d614c9cc123a01b6de1c1c7dee0bc (1).jpg f39fb14378242ac4b819ed826d46ba8f (1).jpg b0f402acc2d368a5fcf31aa4f0d63b5d (2).jpg c089249eef395c2a4bcee3b189de11ac (2).jpg

I would start with multiple thalers. That would keep me busy for a while and take a lot of money.

I'd spend "a bunch" on a secure place to store the coins as well as "a second bunch" on cabinets, cases, holders, etc. to display them.

Like most hobbies, it can be all about the gear as well as the coins.

I'd be a very old man with very young chicks. Can't do anything, what won't get up won't get out, but I can certainly look a lot. Until my wife gets home from the extended vacation, I sent her on. Oh well, good things don't last, duh...

What is the most expensive world coin? I'm wondering if you didn't care about grade, how much it would take to get an example of every coin ever made. For example, if you averaged 100 euros per coin, you could get 10 million coins for a billion euros. Would that cover it?

You could not even get every AR coin from the German states for 1B/ the German gold issues would amt. to 1 Trillion. There are many world coins that never come up for auction/ the AV 20 Stater from Baktria would be 20+M/ the Mughal AV 1000/ 500 Mohurs probably 100M. Just to collect all of the Roman Aurei/ Multiple Aurei would be 20B++
But to answer original question/ the ONLY way you could get 10M coins for 1B= buying modern issue stuff (1950-2020) no gold coins included. If you went after FDC/ MS 100/50 Dukaten and etc/ maybe you would get 1000 coins for a Billion. Most go for 1M+++:( This Basel b0f402acc2d368a5fcf31aa4f0d63b5d (2).jpg AV 20 Dukaten (1741) would be a Million dollar coin!
