Hey guys, I just got this email from Heritage Auctions and I’m wondering if it’s a scam? I checked the email sender and it’s ha@bids.com which is an actual HA email but idk if it can be faked. If someone has any knowledge about this I’d appreciate it. Thanks!
Two thoughts: 1. You just bought it and you may not want to sell it yet… and 2. This looks legitimate but I would call Heritage/your contact and verify the offer. The offer is giving you the chance to sell very quickly and not only recoup your purchase price but also 35% more. You could make a counter offer of $3000 to see if he is still interested enough, if you wanted to sell again quickly. Personally, if I were you, I would reject instantly and be happy with the purchase you just made last month. This all pre-supposes you actually have an account with Heritage and purchased the item last May 7, 2021…jmho…Spark
Awesome thanks! I just wanted to be very careful since these days scams are everywhere and it would be awful to send my coin to someone and then be told the email was fake. Thanks again I appreciate it! Looks like I have some thinking to do.
Yeah I did buy that coin on May 7th for that price of $1500. Oh yeah I am like 80% no and 20% yes. I just wanted to know if it was real or not even if I don’t accept the offer since if it was fake I wanted to contact HA and let them know fake emails are being sent by someone claiming to be them so they could inform other customers to ignore such emails.
Not sure how they choose the coins, but when you look on HA, there are many coins available for people to make offers to the owners, as above.
Meant to add: My screenshot shows me (just another looker) that there is already an offer for the coin that you are considering, but I'm able to submit a backup offer.
Hmm I didn’t know that. I guess the reason it doesn’t show that option for me is because I’m the owner so I can’t make an offer on a coin I already own. It just seemed like a “too good to be true” and you know what people say about that. Strange that for once something TGTBT actually is true.
Your coin is a very nice example. Flipping for a profit is very tempting, but if you're only looking for 1 owl for your collection, this a nice coin and I would keep it if it were mine (I have 1 owl in my collection, but it's not as nice) 25 years ago, I bought a nice bust dollar for my type set, but flipped it for a 20% profit a few months later. I was happy st the time, but wish I would have kept it.
Forty years ago I flipped a 1955 doubled-die cent in AU. Not smart but hindsight is better than foresight. Do I regret it? No. We all make decisions based on what will bring us the greatest happiness at that moment.
I'd sell that coin for that amount in a heartbeat. It's someone that highly values the slab that wants it. It would be easy to replace that coin at auction for that price. Still lots of examples nicer than even that selling for 1250-1700.
Owls are common and easy to find now.....wasn't a hoard of tens of thousands recently found a few years back?
But are they Eastern issues with high relief reverses? There might be things about this coin that the examples you’re talking about don’t have.
Yeah I don’t think I’m going to accept the offer because I just got the coin last month and I’m not trying to be a coin dealer flipping coins to make a profit. It’s good to know that I didn’t overpay though at $1500 like I was told by a few people.
But MS owls aren’t and Eastern issue owls are only a small fraction of the MS owls that remain. I was talking to someone on the PCGS forums and they said it might be because my owl has a nice circular planchet with the design well centered.
If it's something I'm kind of meh on in hand, I would sell instantly. If it's something I really like, I would probably make a counter offer in the moon money realm. Then reevaluate if the buyers ups their offer. I like collecting coins. I also like searching and researching coins. Every time I sell a coin it creates more money to look for and purchase more coins. I don't regret the nice coins that I have sold. Had I not sold them I would not have had the funds to purchase other nice coins. Those sales put nice coins in other's collection adding to their happiness. Making others happy makes me happy.
Yeah I see what you mean. I just like my Athenian owl a lot and I just bought it last month so I don’t really want to sell it and then have to go find another one to buy and end up with one worse than I had or that costs more than I was paid. HA has owls for auction all the time but only like 5% of them are eastern issues and only like 10% of that 5% are MS. But I did reject the offer. Maybe he’ll make a counteroffer but even if he doesn’t I’m OK with keeping my coin
