...I just recieved the 2005 edition. Bought it on ebay for $12.00. Didn't have to leave the house. E-bay is cool. Anyway, I also have previous years of the Red book and I have a question. Where there is a picture of say a 8 over 7. Heck, just go look at the 1888 inidan head pic they have. Its supposed to show an 8 over 7. I just can't make it out. Its like that with some other examples in the book. Am I just blind or don't know what to look for?? Any of you have the same problem? Thanks, Jim
The 1888/7 is one of the tougher overdates to see. I believe it was discovered by Jim Ruddy in the early 1970s. You can just barely make out the bottom tip of the number "7" just below the bottom of the "8", and that's with magnification. The true 1888/7, or at least the most valuable variety, can just barely be seen even you know exactly what to look for and where to look for it.
The top left corner of the 7 can be seen to the left of the last 8 in the date. The red book photo isn't the best it could be. But as usual the red book is only a rough guide.
Thanks guys for the info and thanks for the pics Jody. That helped alot. I still couldn't see a thing in the first pic but the second one I could see what was mentioned. I have a real nice 1888. The last 8 just looks different but I cannot see any sign of a 7. I have a 30X loop too. I can now go look at the D in UNITED and see if its like the ones mentioned in the link. Thanks again guys. Jim
