Something for you to think about.

Say if its your B-day or it is christmas (or just because), and a family member spends good gets you a coin that they thought was real, but you can tell it is a counterfeit. What would you do?

Keep it and treasure it the same way I do with any gift, just because it is fake dont make the sentiments behind the purchase any less. I would also try to get it stamped copy if possible, unless of course it was a very early contempory forgery

If others were around I'd bite my tongue until I could get them alone and let them know it's a counterfeit, that way they can return it for a refund and get something else. ;)

    Ribbit :)

I agree with Toad.. Let them know privately.. They probably paid good money for a real coin. They got juked and you should let them know.. Especially so you don't get another for your next birthday/Christmas...

I would definitely let them know.

Make sure they know you appreciate the gift, but that it is not genuine. There is no reason they should have wasted their money buying something you don't enjoy.

I, too, would discretely let them know and maybe even go with him to return it. A little back-up never hurts. I would also like to hear the story about how the seller didn't know it was a fake. If he won't buy it back you could always mention that selling counterfeit money is a federal crime!

OK, I'm getting a bit carried away here with all this intrigue, but you never know. So it always better to be safe than sorry.

I would definately let them know. I would prefer they return it. There is no reason a vender should get away selling anything deceiving, let alone illegal. I do not think many people I know would take this the wrong way at all.

I would tell them too. The gift giver was ripped off. I usually tell friends and relatives that are not familiar with coin collecting to not get me coins or currency for that reason. That and the dealer they bought it from may have overpriced the coin. I see coin ads in the Sunday Paper inserts that are overpriced.

It all depends....If the coin was a known rarity, and I felt that the person involved paid a great deal of money for it, I would most definitely say something. On the other hand, if it were a common fake I'd accept it much in the same way De Orc stated.

Sucker punch them in the stomach and as they bent over in pain, put the coin in their face and point out why it is fake. J/K Most likely wouldn't be able to tell until after I posted on here. If I did know, I would take them off to the side if it was a rarity and tell them. If not, I would thank them and add it to my counterfeit colletion. Maybe they were testing me and already knew?

I'd probably let them know in private , if it wouldn't hurt their feelings , if it would I'd keep silent .

Yep. Let them know privately. They could try to get their money back. Or more importantly, you might prevent them from making the same mistake in the future.

OK, in the realm of intrigue - maybe the family member cheaped out on you and bought it, knowing it was a fake, and hoping you wouldn't notice? Wouldn't put it past at least one member of my family.
