A couple of real gems this morning.

Wonder if that was a response to this earlier post:

The sad thing, of course, is that people do "sell" collections to CoinStar for 91% of face value every day. But that doesn't make you any less contemptible, Mr. Big-Time Craigslist Operator.

    I don't pay for CoinStar.

My credit union membership allows free use to us.

I've posted a few ads on craigslist to warn people of ads like the one you posted, but none of them were that bad, just misleading. There was one guy up in Helena who was constantly advertising that he was paying "top dollar" for silver coins, but he wasn't. Maybe he got tired of my posts and moved on...

Hey, if they can make money and provide a service that somebody demands I see no problem. Obviously we are too intelligent to sell junk at 8x face but if somebody is in the need of quick cash and wants somebody to come to them there you go.

I don't have too much of a problem with lowball offers either, as long as they're being honest. Saying you're paying the most for coins in your area when you're not, is not being honest and I'll call them out on it every time.

I take issue with people who feed on others misunderstanding and I don't personally subscribe to the idea that you should have done your own research or knew what it was worth beforehand. I've purchased quite a few times from people who didn't know what they had (just junk silver mostly) and I always explain it the same way.....tell them what it's worth, what they would get if they tried to take it somewhere and what I'll pay them - which is 99% of the time in the middle. My feeling is always that if they get more than they would from a shop and I buy it for less than it would cost me at the same shop - than it's win-win. I always encourage them to get another opinion and sometimes they do - which ends up with my buying the coins anyway after they confirm it. On other items, I don't always have a clue (usually with notes) when I buy them and sometimes I pay way more than its worth and sometimes I end up with a deal - but neither of us knew what the items were.

Years ago - my grandmother sold about 200 silver dollars to a local guy who raked her over the coals becasue she didn't now what the value was - I was so ****ed when i found out. To me, there is an obligation as a human being to not be a scumbag, to be honest and try to make a deal that works both ways. I know the same thing could be said for cherry picking a variety from a dealer etc. but I'm talking about outright lying or not being forthcoming with what you know.

I love how they say a pawn show will give them a fraction of what the are worth then they offer 8x face which is a joke of a fraction in itself. The pawn shops might even offer more than that.

Yep. The last offer I got for 90% was a fraction of face value, too -- 205/10, to be exact. :)

The coin star at my grocery gives you 100% back if you use it for a gift card for the store or Amazon.
