If money were no object, what coin(s) would you like to own?

Personally I would like to own a set of the original 1792 patterns.

These patterns set forth our nation, and departed from traditional coinage ideas. (depicting leaders)

I would buy the proof issues, (1938-1942-P, and 1946-1955) and the 1994-P matte and 1997-P matte Jefferson nickels.
I have beautiful uncirculated examples of all the others.

Hmmmmm - I'd have to have Peter increase the posting limits to list them all here

Seriously - my collecting habits are way too diverse to even be able to begin such a list. As an example - I am working on a set of Netherland ducats - a series that encompasses over 400 yrs of the design being used. Then I'd like to move on to other nation's examples of ducats. In fact I already have ;)

I would like to complete my collection of original US Proof & Mint sets. I have but the oldest already- they're just not so easy to come by.

I still need 3 of the original GSA issued dates. They're not easy to come by either for with 2 of them there are only 1 known example for each.

I have barely begun a collection of original British Proof sets - in original cases. Throw in all the columanarios I need to finish my set of Spanish colonial coinage, all the other world gold series I am working on. Well you begin to get the idea :D

I would put the following on my list! (delusions of grandeur)

A collection of every US dollar - from Flowing hair to present day
An example of coinage from every country.

if money were no object. hmmmmm
first i would start at the franklins. i would buy all proofs first. pf 68 or 9 including the 61 dd. then i would go for business strikes ms 68 or 9 fbl.

then i would go to the 2 cent series all of them in pf 65 and at least ms 60.

then i would finish the proof set run i started but i would have to jump to an earlier date. oh say 1936 the beginning.

then i would have to start with the nova costalatio coppers all of them that could be had to complete the set. then... then.... then...

nd, what is or was the bass collection?

    Oh my........

The Bass collection was one of the most complete coin collections ever assembled. I believe the ANA has a section devoted to this collection.

My main interest is Canadian pennies nickels and dimes. I would have the best I can find rather than the best I can afford.

I'd get all of the 1913 Liberty Head nickels before you guys got them. :p Is it official that only 5 were made? And have all been found?

Oh yeah, they are all had. The last one was found (I think) by someone bringing a coin into a dealer wondering what it was worth.

I want to experience that visit.... :-D

Yeah, I'd do something like the Bass collection. A complete set of US coins, in the finest condition available. The Mother of all registry sets!!!!!!

One of the multi-billionaires (i.e. Gates, Buffett, Dell) could probably do it. Who knows, Gates might have secretly completed a set, which he will auction off in 20 years or so to benefit his foundation!!

I don't like to think that money is no object....it feels like cheating. But if I were a Billionaire...i would definetely put all of my spare time into metal detecting, gold panning, and buying coins. That would be so much fun with that much money ;)

    if i was bill gates,

i would forget about computers and buy as many coins as I could. I'd load up on buffalo nickels, silver walking libert halves, and other things and use them in my change to give to other people

If you were Bill Gates, you could probably corner the market on buffnicks and Walkers!!!! Reminds me of the good ol days when the Hunt brothers tried to corner the silver market in 1980 --- Silver was over $40 an ounce and a circulated 1964 Roosevelt dime was worth $6!!!

Are Doug and I the only ones here who realize that there have been wonderful coins minted outside of North America[IMG]

Of course the first thing I would do with Bill Gates' money would be to compile a complete type collection of Oban Kin (large ink-signed gold pieces) from Tensho-Hishi times (1573-1591) through to the much smaller piece from the Man-En period (1868-70) just after the end of the Shogunate, on the eve of modern Japanese coin production. That's 23 pieces, valued between $900, and $1-million+ each! :D :D :D

If that didn't blow the budget, I could probably think of something else. [IMG]

sorry satootoko. i realized that your 1990 proof that commemorates Akihito's enthronement. really caught my eye. i would have to compile a set of these too.

Well, I for one would not worry about what I would do IF I had Bill's money, cause I never will have Bill's money unless he spends a dollar somewhere and I end up with it.

I would get a whole collection of Mint/Proof sets, then every half dollar ever minted, and then one 1895 Morgan dollar.

I am in the process of building a BU set of Mercs for my personal collection. Knowing my purchasing habits and finances, it will take many years to complete, and I will work on numerous other sets in the mean time. For me, having the funds available to simply make some calls and complete the set all at once would take the fun out of it.

What I could use instead, is a spare $250,000 or so a year to spend on my habit ;-)
