I'm not a gold coin collector (yet), but I'm getting the "auvies" (french for itch, I think).
Any suggestions for my first coin for under $150 (US or foreign)

What kind of coin would you prefer - US, French, British, Swiss ?? And do you have a preference for grade ? You'd have a hard time finding US gold, other than AGE, in BU for $150 or less. But with world coinage - you have many choices :D

    GD,
I have no preferences, just looking for a nice quality BU grade coin. I am aware of a few examples (Swiss-Helvetia, France-Rooster & Angel, as well as those mentioned already in this thread) but not sure if these are good for starters. I would like to start with a solid CLASSIC coin (old or new) even if I have to pay a little more than the $150.

I'm primarily working on my Morgan O-Mint Series collection but have recently added a few foreign silver coins (1934 Panama Balboa & 1963 Greek 30 Drachmai) and looking to add 1 or 2 gold coins to my collection.

I hope this clears up a few of your questions, I know you are a collector of world (including US) coins and would value your opinion.

$5.00 gold...you might have to go a little over $150--

Since GDJMSP collects world coins only, I will guess that he will give his opinion as a world coin but I think the US Liberty Head $5.00 gold piece are nicer--Even though I don't collect gold coins that is my pick...I own a nice piece (MS61) See photo---

If you go with world coins sometimes they are cheaper than US.

Take in mind that gold coins (at least to me) always look lower grade than they are....I think it is because gold is softer and it nicks easier....

Good starters ? I don't know what to say - everybody has to start someplace :D

But quite honestly, whatever coin you start with, you should be sure YOU really like it. There's no doubt that you get much more bang for your buck with world gold than you do with US gold. And to be honest I like the designs much more. But you may not feel that way. But if you do, well then you can get as many as 3 BU world gold coins for that same $150 + or - ;)

I absolutely love the French Angel and Rooster - and of course my favorite the Netherlands ducat. But there are also Austrian ducats, gorgeous designs and very well made coins. Or British, Canadian or Australian sovereigns. The potential list is almost endless.

    GDJMSP,
Thanks for your opinion, I'll ask again although I'm sure it has been asked before many times, if I go foreign should I buy a slabbed coin and are slabbed coins as prevalent in gold coins as in silver?

    Speedy,
That $5 liberty looks like a real nice coin for me also.!!

In my opinion yes - at least until you learn more about the coins. There are many counterfeits out there for ALL gold coins. And you will have no problem finding them slabbed. If you like, contact me privately and I will be happy to recommend a few dealers to you.

    Go Australian

Australia offers so beautifu gold coins.
    Check out the nugget series.
The nice thing about their bullion coins is they start at 1/20 of an oz.
Anyone who collects coins can usually afford one of thes- small but good looking. on the other hand they make a one kilo coin (aprox 2.7 lbs) out of my price range
for a fun look check out this link

    Richard,
I like Austrialian coins and have silver bullion in my "World Silver Series" collection.
I'm not really looking for a gold bullion type coin as my first gold coin. Do you know of any earlier australian gold coinage?

After scouring the internet I must agree with GD 150% with this statement>>In fact the foreign coins are mostly .12xx percent gold content, the ducats, francs, reales, many can be had in high quality for under $100, as far as US coins the $2.50 Indians RAW can be had for under $200 in high grades "UNSLABBEB"--In fact I have started to acquire some of these puppies, I am bidding on an angle, couple ducats, and ima eyeballing a reales from brazil--all gold of course-- :D
You can of course buy Gold $5 American Gold Eagles for also under $100, in some cases high grade for that, but they are modern coins, which I guess it is ok--So many gold coins so little time to buy them all-- :D

    Everyone,

Now that I have this coin it brings me to another question.

    Facts first:
I plan on holding on to it for the long term.
I paid $98 for it raw.

Should I get it slabbed ?? (of course NGC or PCGS)
What other factors should be considered in my decision?
