Hi. A couple ids required with references if possible please. I can't find a match for the Roman on Wildwinds and have no Sasanian literature. TIA.
your first coin is Constantine I A.D. 324- 325 AE nummus CONSTAN-TINVS AVG; Laureate head right. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG; campgate, two turrets, no doors, star above. In ex. PTR RIC VII Trier 449 and I think that the second is Khusro II https://www.beastcoins.com/Sasanian/Sasanian.htm
Many thanks. That Sasanian site is really useful. As for the Constantine, I had got as far as Trier and those around RIC 449 previously, but although the portrait is a good fit for RIC 449, the mark on Wildwinds shows STR and not PTR. In fact there are no PTRs listed without a crescent or some other appendage. Is it right to assume the actual number is close to 449, but just not listed?
Trier was using two workshops- P and S; which are abbreviations for Prima (first) and Secunda (second). So Trier 449 can have either PTR or STR as a mintmark. Wildwinds is not a comprehensive site, it merely has one example of 449. Sometimes there is a rarity difference between workshops; but both of these are very common.
For Khusro II (and Sasanid coinage) this site is very helpful: http://grifterrec.rasmir.com/sasania/kII_types/kII_types.html http://grifterrec.rasmir.com/sasania/sasanian.html http://grifterrec.rasmir.com/sasania/sas_mint/dp/sas_date_table.html http://grifterrec.rasmir.com/sasania/sas_mint/sas_mint_table.html
